I take my ds to swimming every saturday at the Y and have to take him into the women's locker room to change after his class. There are plenty of naked women walking around. At what age to you think it becomes inappropriate to bring a boy into the ladies locker room, because it could make either the boy or the women uncomfortable?

        • No, he wouldn't go swimming without an adult male I trust to take him into the men's room.

                  • NP: Or find a facility with family changing rooms? Most (YMCAs, etc.) do have them.

                • Do what parents do when they don't want to leave their child alone: get a friend or babysitter to look after him!

        • I wonder about this as well. My ds is almost 5 and I don't think he even notices who is in the locker room. I am definitely not comfortable sending him into the men's locker room alone. What to do?

        • No. Just change him in a regular bathroom, not a lockerroom.

    • I think the other women will be uncomfortable well before the boy is. I think our Y gives a cut off of 6. I take 4.5 yo ds still.

      • our y has family changing areas. rooms where a woman can change a young ds (off the women's locker room, but before you get to it and with a door) and one where a man can change a small dd. this seems to be the best solution.

      • JCC cutoff is 4 y/o, but there is a family locker room available.

    • My 4.5 y/o DS is pretty oblivious of other people's bodies, my 6 y/o DD is much more aware - I wouldn't be comfortable sending her into a men's locker room at this stage, while I'd have no issue bring DS into a women's. So probably somewhere in that range (5-6).

    • older than 5, which is the age of my ds. he comes into the women's locker room with me. No way is he going into the men's locker room alone. he doesn't care about the women changing.

    • I was in a locker room the other day changing and a ds pointed at an older woman and said, "her boobs are droopey!" I thought it was hilarious but the woman didn't. He was probably 6. I don't feel uncomfortable around them, but I think when they start noticing, somethings gotta give.

    • My 6 yo ds comes into the women's with me (private school pool for lessons) but I scope the place first, then hustle him in, fast, to a stall, where he changes, & out to the pool. Can't let him go by himself.

    • most places have family changing rooms - where fathers can take DDs and mothers can take DSs who are too old to be in opposite gender locker rooms and too young to be sent in by themselves. if your's doesn't have this available, it's time to suggest it.

    • If they don't have a family locker room, 5 or 6. If they do, 4. Just as an aside, my developing tween HATES when little boys are in the women's locker room. I don't care all that much, but she will take her stuff into a bathroom stall and change in there if there's a boy around. At the very least, don't let them stare!
