Anyone know the percentage of kids staying at NEST for HS? And how the kids did that are leaving? (I obviously have a dc in middle school there).

    • Wouldn't you know these numbers since your dc is in MS there?

        • No idea, but I would assume well. FWIW, I haven't heard great things about nest high school, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't most nest 8th graders 1st choice.

        • I think NEST MS kids do well in HS placement - hence, how few end up stuck at NEST for HS.

          • "Stuck" is correct. It's laughable how many people on this board pick K placements based on the high school. You have know idea what your kid will be interested in at that time. Plus, who wants to stay at one school for 13 years?

            • the K-12 part for us was about "could" not "would."

              • Agree. And who knows what it will look like in 8 years? It might be a real gem.

                • It might be a gem, but as a parent with 2 older children, it could have been the perfect school and my kids would not have stayed (and will not for my current 7th grader), nor will any of their friends if they have a choice. You'll find that your children have a lot more say in where the go to hs than you would imagine, especially with such wonderful choices for specific interests. As a BTDT, I can see taking account the K-8 option, since middle school placement is difficult (plus it's a VERY sucky age), but HS, so much changes with your child.

                  • Oh, I agree - but I still think it's nice that the option is there.

                    • At this point for most it's a fallback at best. Don't get me wrong, in a system where kids can end up with no HS placement at all (even kids with impressive records) it's great to have a fallback. Don't know if the DOE will let NEST guarantee your admission there if you don't pick it as your first choice.

                    • As an option, yes, (provided that the hs can get it's act together) but there are plenty of parents who delusionally think their child is set once they enter a k-12. Personally, as a BTDT, I wouldn't even factor in the hs other than what it's impact on the lower school kids (socially). I know ms kid is not very fond of the hs kids (bad language, pushing, pot smoking, etc). Also, it's incredible crowded on that floor, as MS & HS share space.

                      • ITA. My dd went to 6-12 school for MS -- it was a great place for her for MS but she had no interest in staying for the HS (even though it is quite good). You can't possibly know in K what will be a good fit for your dc in MS and HS and hence a viable "option" for your dc.

                      • It's funny, but as a K parent, I haven't even once seen a high school kid yet. I don't do drop off or pick up at the school, but it's amazing that I have yet to run into a single older kid.

                        • I'm not sure where else you'd run into them if you don't do drop off or pick up. There is virtually no interaction with the hs kids and the ls kids, which is both good and bad IMO.

                        • Our dd entered NEST for sixth. We are glad to have the HS but our dd is already saying she wants to go somewhere else for HS (but LOVES Nest). Many of her friends who entered in sixth have no interest in leaaving. I think NEST HS will look very different, very soon. Especially with so many private school kids trying to get into a specialized public high.

                        • I think its one thing to look at the high school when looking at the middle school, but as a K parent, it doesn't make sense.

                        • np - I know you're talking about NEST and I agree with you about the craziness of looking at HS when applying for K but...Hunter's HS was a big factor in choosing it over Anderson for us.

                        • Do a lot of Hunter kids actually stay from K to 12? I was under the impression that was the case for those entering in 7th grade, but no so much those starting in K.
