  • Any 5th grade parents on (public school)? How important is it to get a 4 on both ELA and Math for most selective middle schools? Does a high 3 (over 700) on one of them mean you have just as good of a chance, or does that really hurt?

    • DC got into LAB w/a high 3 in the ELA and a 4 in Math. However, DC's friend with two 4s did not.

      • my ds got a perfect 4 on both ela and math for 4th grade -that's the grades schools looked for selective middle school, said the test was easy at NEST, great report card but wasn't accepted but got into another great school. wanted to go to NEST..high 3's and 4's should be fine....btw, not bragging but he got 4's on his fifth grade ela, math, ss,.....any suggestions on the hunter's test for 7th grade?

        • hold off on bragging re Hunter cutoff - you need scores that are above the 90th %ile. Not all scores ranked as level 4 are above the 90th percentile.

          • huh??? I don't know what you're talking about, but a 4 on the state test is above the 90th percentile

            • last year, hunter required 744 or higher on the math. A score of 699 got you a 4, but was way below the hunter cutoff. Don't count your chickens....

              • Yup - dd got a 4 in the math last year in 5th, something in the 700s (I forget) and it was below the Hunter cutoff - a shame, because she was in the 95th perecntile on the ELA.

              • troll, I guess you don't understand what a perfect score is --- it's a 800 - in otherwords my ds didn't anwer all the questions correctly

                • read the post before you start trash talking -poster above said ds got perfect scores on the 4th grade tests and "4s" on 5th grade test (the relevant one for hunter cut-off). And btw, perfect score varies. My dd got a perfect score on the 6th grade ELA and it was a 785, not an 800.

    • I think they generally look at a combined score: Anderson and Delta both need 1385 (or that was the cut-off this year anyway). The score is just the cutoff to get in to take the (respective) tests. If a school has its own test I don't think the ELA/Math scores have any meaning beyond getting you to the next step.

      • Thanks -- I'm not so worried about the cutoff since dc's combined scores are well over 1400. But I do wonder if schools pick 2 4s over a 4 and a high 3, or if it truly is just a cutoff and they aren't looked at beyond that.
