Where does the term redshirting come from? I know what it means but why the term?

- According to Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged, the term "redshirt" is so called from the red jersey commonly worn by such a player in practice scrimmages against the regulars.

  - ^^^Doesn't it come from college sports? A red-shirt freshman is someone who sits out his freshman year for sports and his sophomore year is then considered his freshman year. Essentially, a player who was held back a year.
