    • According to Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged, the term "redshirt" is so called from the red jersey commonly worn by such a player in practice scrimmages against the regulars.

      • ^^^Doesn't it come from college sports? A red-shirt freshman is someone who sits out his freshman year for sports and his sophomore year is then considered his freshman year. Essentially, a player who was held back a year.

        • except the player is not held back as far as school goes, just does not play freshman year so preserves 4 years of eligibility. It is different than redshirting for K.
