    • In New York publics the cutoff is by year 12/31 so youngest. Privates have a 9/1 cutoff

      • np In reality, though, there are very few kids in privates who start k the month they turn 5.

                • if we did private pre-k, DC would be oldest...but then the following year if DC started into public K, they already would be a year older than the other DCs because they waited a year later to start private pre-k.

                  • DOE does by year so if you keep your dc in pre-K for an extra year, the doe would put dc in 1st grade

                  • public k in nyc makes you start kindergarten (regardless of what you did the year before) during the year in which the child turns five. k is not mandatory, but if you don't do k, then 1st during the year they turn six.

                  • You know what I amwrong, New York State leaves it up to the local aurthority. But the folks that I know have redshirted have summer b-days and they didn't jump through hoops to redshirt

                    • interesting (and gracious of you to admit). i don't believe in red-shirting, and think it harms the children in the long run.

                      • School enrollment cut-off is determined district by district -- it's not a statewide standard, at least in NY and NJ.

    • in my burb it's somewhere in the middle. Cut-off is 10/1. Parents redshirt their kids. so usually the oldest is born in August (already age 6 when K starts in Sept).
