What is the cost of a babysitter / nanny in NYC? I have a one-month old and will be going back to work in two months. We have to start meeting with people but aren't even sure how much to pay or if we ask them how much they charge or we tell them how much we are offering. Any assistance appreciated!

    • Full-time or part-time? How many hours per week? Generally for newborns you're looking at around $22-30/hour.

      • this is the most ridiculous post i've ever seen. NO nanny is starting out at $30/hr for a newborn. I mean, hey at 50 hrs/week, that's a $72,000/year salary!

        • I make $37.50/hour, but I'm a MANny. Guess that makes a difference.

          • Do you get paid extra for being obnoxious?

      • To whomever posts these numbers -- do you really think you are going to change the going rate by posting numbers outside of the normal range? I do not know a single soul who pays that much. Twenty is the highest I know of and they pay that for a college graduate. For one child, starting salary, most pay around 15/hour. I know those who pay less, but think that is being cheap. I think 15 is a fair and normal start.

    • ignore the poster above--when we had one db, we started our nanny at $600/week for 50 hours/week, which seemed pretty standard in our neighborhood (uws). we now have 2 dcs and she makes $750/week, plus we pay her for metrocard. congratulations on db, btw.

      • Ditto. We are on the UWS, pay $615/week (which includes $35 for food) plus monthly metro card and cell phone. This is for approx 50 hrs/week.

    • Ignore the poster above (uws) -- she's obviously employing an illegal alien. I can't think of anyone else who would settle for such a low wage.

    • For over 40+ hours, $500 and up. The more experience and credentials you want, the more expensive. For 1 dc, I think starting at up to $650 or so is reasonable. Remember, you have annual raises and if you have another dc, it's going to go up, so the higher you start, the harder that's going to be. OTOH, if you can afford it, don't pass up someone awesome if they are a little over your price range.

      • np: I have to say, I don't know anyone (other than nannies) who automatically gets annual raises these days... Many people I know have had their salaries, hours, benefits, even jobs, slashed.

        • or: that's true. keep in mind though that being a nanny has no job growth. it's not like she's getting promoted to head nanny with a raise to go with that. i think in "normal times" secretaries and hourly people are up for raises on a somewhat regular basis.

          • np Secretaries and hourly people (especially hourly people) top out before nannies do. And they pay these pesky little things called TAXES.

      • ITA with $650, but I think annual raises depends. If you can afford it, great; if not, talk it out with your nanny.

    • I'd say $650 for Manhattan, less than that for the outerboroughs.

    • We pay $15/hour (and I am told that is the Manhattan average), plus $5/day toward daytimg transportation and of course cab fare if she is working late night (though I think she just pockets the cash and takes the subway anyway!).

      • Actually, it's a little higher than average (but not outrageously so like the $30 poster) in this economy.

    • I live on the UES and everyone I know pays $550-$600 to start with one newborn. This is for hours ranging from 45-55/week.

      • Thanks! We'll probably do it for 3-4 days per week from around 8 to 6, so I guess 10-15 per hour is the rate... Thank you!
