UrbanBaby Asks...
Do you 'enjoy' spending time with your kids?
- Yes, most of the time we really have fun together
- Sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's really dull and aggravating
- Honestly most of the time it's not fun at all, but it's not supposed to be fun
- I really don't enjoy it at all, and wish I could spend less time with them

What is the cost of a babysitter / nanny in NYC? I have a one-month old and will be going back to work in two months. We have to start meeting with people but aren't even sure how much to pay or if we ask them how much they charge or we tell them how much we are offering. Any assistance appreciated!
24 replies [ Reply | Watch | Morethis is the most ridiculous post i've ever seen. NO nanny is starting out at $30/hr for a newborn. I mean, hey at 50 hrs/week, that's a $72,000/year salary!

To whomever posts these numbers -- do you really think you are going to change the going rate by posting numbers outside of the normal range? I do not know a single soul who pays that much. Twenty is the highest I know of and they pay that for a college graduate. For one child, starting salary, most pay around 15/hour. I know those who pay less, but think that is being cheap. I think 15 is a fair and normal start.

Ignore the poster above (uws) -- she's obviously employing an illegal alien. I can't think of anyone else who would settle for such a low wage.
[ Reply | More ]For over 40+ hours, $500 and up. The more experience and credentials you want, the more expensive. For 1 dc, I think starting at up to $650 or so is reasonable. Remember, you have annual raises and if you have another dc, it's going to go up, so the higher you start, the harder that's going to be. OTOH, if you can afford it, don't pass up someone awesome if they are a little over your price range.
[ Reply | More ]I live on the UES and everyone I know pays $550-$600 to start with one newborn. This is for hours ranging from 45-55/week.
