Weekend wrecked. Just checked email and we didn't get in to a public PreK. Applied to 5, including our zoned school which has a PreK. This is horrible. I'm so angry and upset I don't even know what to do. Anyone else hear?

Angry and speechless beyond belief. We have always planned to go public school system - never a doubt in our mind - and we can't get into a public PreK. Nice start.

if the city was serious, it could easily find enough space for pre-K and K kids.
[ Reply | Options ]i'd rather the doe spend its limited funds on something else. if you can't afford daycare or babysitting, you should look into head start.
[ Reply | Options ]there aren't nearly enough head start places for the eligible kids. simply ramping up those numbers would be a start. the income requirements for head start keep out a huge number of kids who's parents can't afford daycare or babysitting, though, and who would really benefit from some program that gets them away from the TV during the day. i think a lot more needs to be done for the low-income under-5 crowd in this city.

Hang on in there. Many people may not take up their slots. or might have applied, then made other plans. Let the DOE know you are still keen to take up a place if one should become available.
[ Reply | Options ]i'm in the same boat. applied to 5 but didn't get in anywhere. would it be more fruitful to talk to DoE or to the individual schools' parent coordinators to try to get in? has anyone gotten into a school via the round 2 lottery?

op: And who is going to watch my kid while I work then? I'm a single mom. Maybe the 'need' of preschool is about someone taking care of my child while I work. I'm not some affluent mom who can afford a nanny. Nor am I someone who believes PreK is some leg-up kind of entry-way into a fabulous private school.

op: Not looking for daycare. Looking for a good environment for my kid. And the public PreKs I toured looked great. Inviting, safe, interesting, etc. Who the hell are you?
[ Reply | Options ]"And who is going to watch my kid while I work then?" suggests you're looking for daycare.
[ Reply | Options ]op: I was trying to be brief. Next time I will (as now) write "I really was hoping for a great environment, preferably at my zoned school or some decent public school in my neighborhood, where my child can get a great experience every day that incorporates the arts, science, etc. And I'd prefer a public school setting because even though PreK and K admissions are two separate entities and nightmares, I do plan on sending my child to public school because I believe in it - assuming my zoned school isn't horrific (which it's not) and I also work in public education so I have a vested interest in contributing to my zoned school (or whatever school my child ends up at) because that's important to me."
