  • I have been reading all of these posts about reading levels at public schools. Can explain to me what all these public school reading levels are. What is G level, Z level? My DC is at private so I don't get it. For example, what would Charlotte's Web be on that level system?

    • my dd is at a private school, but they use the leveled books for K and 1st grade. don't know what Charlotte's Web is, but Amelia Bedilia is "L". BTW, my school stops using them at M. They feel over that point they aren't really helpful.

      • Thanks. I just couldnt understand it. Our school doesn't use a system like that. They are just assigned reading. They can however choose what they want at the Library.

      • I'm pretty sure this is not correct. It's probably more like level W. Have you actually read Charlotte's Web recently? It's not a simple book.

        • ^^^Oops, I stand corrected -- just checked and it is an R. I thought I recalled it being more difficult, but I was wrong.

          • i think you also need to take into account the subject matter. the story revolves around preventing one of the main characters from being slaughtered with an ax. (the first illustration is actually of fern trying to wrest said ax from her father's hands.) i wouldn't read this to a k dc, but that's just me.

    • My dc's private doesn't use levels either. Google "lexile" and you can find sites where you can find what your dc is reading and other books at that level.

    • If your school is not giving you a lexile number for your dc they are in the dark ages.

      • I think Lexile numbers are absolutely ridiculous. It seems like an "easy" way to track kids abilities in classrooms that are overcrowded with teachers who are overwhelmed

        • np How's that? My dc's teacher never even mentioned lexiles or levels to me. I looked them up as I wanted to find other books that might be appropriate for dc.

    • Charlotte's Web is a beautifully written classic book. if you child is reading this, there's no need to ask about reading levels. Just keep supplying great books.
