I am terribly interested in the occupations of my dc's incoming K class parents at tt private. I plan to google each one when we get the class lists. Is this an odd thing? or do you do this too?

    • i think it's a little odd. why would you care what the parents do? i guess it's interesting when it comes up in conversation, but i guess i'm not very excited to find out.

          • Good lord it would def not occur to me either. Not in a million years! I guess if someone told me that a parent was a celeb and I'd never heard of them then I might take the time.

      • I wa really stunned at how many parents in our children's pre-k did this- as a rule. People were right up front about having done so; They had lots of comments and questions about work we'd done, particular people/clients we'd met/worked with and SO on. It was pretty weird and we're NOT celebs. I've definitely googled clients of my own, before taking on a job, but not parents of our kids' classmates; that seems creepy.

        • so whats their rationale for doing so? to weed socially/financially deficient people out?

          • When I asked one parent, she said, "oh, I'm always curious about people. I google everyone I meet!" She really did. The fact that people didn't seem interested in concealing it, made an interesting point(to me) about major changes in social conduct. I really don't get it.

    • It would never occur to me to do that and I was shocked when a friend told me she did that sort of thing. I have now noticed it seems to go with a certain kind of personality -- are you very competitive, at least somewhat status conscious, and also a little insecure? That would describe my friend and the people I know who have that kind of curiosity and Google-mania.

    • I really hope the parents in my dc's new school don't do this. Don't you already have friends and know interesting people? Or do you think you're just about to become part of the LIfestyles of the Rich and Famous?

    • Have to say, this post reinforces my impression that most parents on the schools board are social climbers.

    • Huh. It wouldn't occur to me to do that. Professions come up in conversation, or they don't. And either way, it just doesn't matter so much to me that I need to google them.

    • Last September I Googled all the parents in my dc's new K class. I never thought for a moment that everyone else didn't do it too. I guess I am a lot weirder than I thought I was.

      • That reminds me of the girls I went to college with in the South. "Hi, nice to meet you, what does you're daddy do?" I guess it is just more covert now. We are in a lucrative business that everyone is very interested in, if you google me and my husband our wonderful lives come up. Why else would Linkedin be so popular?

    • Seems like a very douchey thing to do. I can see researching a potential employer or a new client or doing a background check on a potential nanny, but looking for dirt, because that's really what's this is about, not about simply finding out occupations, is nonsense.
