      • np: Me too- not until recently- I live 4 blocks from there and see the boys come out regularly to work out in Riverside park, in packs outside the school, etc. etc. they look exactly like how I envision my ds in 5-10 years- sweet, kind of bookish- not type A alpha jocks- this is the only reason why mind- you- haven't even toured the place - just know what's posted on here.

    • I might have thought this when my dc was 5, but I don't think any of these schools are the best for my now 13 year old.

      • Any of those three schools or any privates? How has your view changed over the years?

        • Dc needs a smaller, lower key school with less academic pressure. I know this now--didn't know it when dc was 5. We'll be looking at high schools, but not at Trinity, Chapin or HM.

          • How can you tell? My dd is 8 and we're hoping to get into private off year, but I wonder how she would handle a high pressure school, how would I know in advance?

      • We applied to both, got into one of them. I think they are both: 1) great academically, 2) traditional. OK onw is ss and the other co-ed, but I didn't care either way. One more Waspy and the other more Jewish, but I didn't care for that either. The only real difference that I cared about is that Chapin emphasizes (too much for my style) proper manners

        • This is not true. My daughter attended middle and upper school. I think what one might label as manners is really the quality of interpersonal relationshipss between peers and between teacher and student. This relationship is what sets the privates apart from the publics.

          • Within the range of schools in NYC, they are similar. Within the range of independent schools, they are different.
