Need advice...We currently live in the middle class neighborhood in Queens. Our elementary school is decent, Middle School and HS are not. DD is now 2.5. DH wants to sell this house and move to BK. In Brooklyn, house prices for a decent house are about $150 k more than we could get for this house. Our current payments we could afford on 1 salary, while there we it would be more expensive. DH argues that if we would move to BK, we could have more family support as my mom is about to retire. We would eventually need to move anyway, as I am not sending my dd to the middle school in my area. However, I feel that in 10 years, our mortgage will be almost paid off and we would not have difficulties absorbing higher payments. What do you think we should do…wait or move now?

    • easy enough. by high school, students travel to the school to which they are admitted (often in Manhattan). I know many Bklyn kids in Manhattan at Beacon or Stuy or other good schools. For middle school, there are one or two privates that are less $$, like catholic schools or even Montessori Intl (which has a branch in Queens). So you stay where you are, send to local school, find something private (not expensive) when your child is in middle, and then apply out to good public HS for high school. Problem solved.

      • np: There are some good selective public middle schools in Brooklyn and Queens too. Mark Twain MS is very very good and takes kids from all boroughs I believe, though the majority come from Brooklyn and Queens.
