        • But this isn't dcurbanmom. Cathedral schools, Georgetown Day, and Sidwell. Some folks say Big 3/4 and include Maret.

          • It isn't? Seriously? So that is why this page appears so different....imagine that. Even so, I must maintain my view that referring OP to a website that thoroughly discusses the issue seems so -- what is the word, reasonable? -- that I just couldn't help myself.

            • No need to be rude. Just suggest that OP consult link as it covers Big 3 in detail.

          • Stupid response. Logical and appropriate for OR to suggest a website and a forum that deals specifically with DC area private schools.

    • National Cathedral School/St. Albans, Sidwell Friends, Georgetown Day. The next tier is Holton Arms, Maret, followed closely by Landon, Stone Ridge, Georgetown Prep and Georgetown Visitation.

        • That's ridiculous. OP, you definitely need to take a look at the dc urban mom forums. It is obvious that several posters here have no idea what they're talking about. You can go to the private school forum there and get better info

      • or: in my day, while a good school, sidwell wasn't as good as national cathedral/st. albans, but because of recent prominent students (chelsea and the obama girls), it has come up. sidwell was only slightly better than gds, but a very different philosophy (for example, students at gds call the teachers by their first names.

      • These days it absolutely is. The previous OR is correct. The "Big 3" in DC are the Cathedral schools, GDS and Sidwell. Maret is often added in there as well

      • Why do you say that? Is it really just the Big 2 - Sidwell and Cathedral schools?

        • No. It is really Sidwell/Cathedral schools and Maret/GDS for #3 depending on who you talk to. It's really the big 3/4

    • Sidwell, NCS/St. Alban's, GDS (Maret is often thrown in there too. DC is strange though in that there are a lot of schools that are only for the younger grades. There are some K-8s that are excellent and feed into all of the HS. There are also some K-6 schools and some K-3 schools. Some schools start at 3rd grade instead of K. Cast a wide net. There are many good schools in the area

    • Former DC resident for eleven years here. Top three: Cathedral, St. Alban's and Sidwell. Fourth would be Maret. Georgetown Day is far lower.

      • op asked "dc area", dc itself has just a handful, and they're in the suburban corridor of affluent maryland(chevy chase, bethesda) tho technically within the border of dc.

    • If you include Northern VA, you'd add The Potomac School and possibly Maderia (all girls) to the list of the top 3/4/5. Potomac has a stronger national reputation and better emissions than some of the "top 4" DC schools. VERY affluent school (in top 5 US zip code by income) and a little more conservative than Sibley
