    • Oh boy- cleaning is wrong question for this group. They all think nannies, if you dare to have one at all, should only work 8 hours a day, for like $17/hr and even then you need to defer to their wants and needs or you're an intolerantly horrible boss. G-d forbid they should pick up a glass...

            • oh, i guess that means i'd make fifty cents an hour, since i obviously don't use the terms babysitter and nanny the way a fluent english speaker with any brains would. thanks for setting me straight. and for pointing out to poster above that $17/hour is totally reasonable.

Oh, and don't forget the moral superiority of such posters as Nanny Crusader and Mercedes Nanny.

      • I paid $200 a week for 4 full days during my kids' spring break, and 160 for just after school pick up 2 - 5/6, four or five days a week. But I also drop off and let Nanny take younger dd anywhere with her (appointments, whatever) - the time is centered around Nanny's interest and needs as much as child's.

                • i disagree. $15/hour is the low end for a p.t nanny. you won't get laundry (other than dcs') for that unless you hire someone who really isn't very good or is desperate for work.

                • Yes but make the expectation of light housekeeping clear in the first 2 minutes of conversation or you're sunk. Most don't even mind as long as it's part of the initial arrangement.

                • Sounds about right so long as you don't abuse the light cleaning. My nanny will do DB's laundry but I do mine and will occasionally ask her to fold them. As for dishes she just unloads and loads dishwasher.

      • We pay our nanny $19ph. Our daughter is 3mths old and we wanted someone very specific, and someone who wouldn't need to supplement a PT salary with another job, or worse her leaving if she found a FT position. She does all cleaning and laundry that relates to our daughter and she's happy to pick up groceries and tidy up. We have a cleaner who does the harder stuff.

            • Well of course. She has a degree, fluent in English, extensive experience, outstanding references, she's very pleasant and not the sort to sit on a park bench all day. And we wanted someone who'd commit to the long term and be available to travel and cover off hours. Eventually she'll go FT, and the rate will lower but for now we didn't want to lose her to another 'fill in' position that may make her unavailable to us.

                  • Our contract covers the change in rate. When we switch to FT she'll be on a salary, one that she suggested and that we're happy with , we negotiated all this prior to her starting. This is how she's done it previously and her references reflect how loyal and solid her work history has been.

    • I pay $13/hr for one dc, $15/hr if all 3 are home. I have a few different people who work occasionally. The one who is a ft nanny for another family always leaves the apt immaculate, though no heavy cleaning. The younger students generally leave a bit of a mess. FWIW I've found everyone pretty much asks $15/hr as a default. Though if you advertise a job at lower wages you will still get more applicants than you can screen these days.

I never asked her to clean, she just started to do it. Someitmes she leaves early, sometimes she stays late. We are going on to year 6 and I think we both feel very lucky. FWIW my nanny is educated, former teacher for many years in the Phillipines, and speaks fluent English. I have foubd many jobs for her nanny friends over the yrs and she has been very grateful.
