is it true that being able to become class parent for preschool is like winning a popularity contest?

- Don't know. I've chaired the auction and other events, but have never been taken up on offer to be class parent (2nd kid in preschool now).

    - I share responsibilities with another mom - she's a SAHM with 2 older DC (not in nursery school) and I'm a WOHM with 1 older DC (also in the school right now). We set up an email list and send out calendar reminders. We organize a few events for the class (breakfast for the moms, a cocktail party, etc.). We collect money for teacher gifts (holidays and the end of the year). We help the teachers as needed (pumpkin at Halloween, decorations for Valentine's Day, etc.).

        Checked off a bunch of things on an interest form (including class parent) - and the school called a few weeks later and "offered" the position to me. I'm happy to do it - but I would not have been upset if I hadn't been picked, it's a school with plenty of volunteer opportunities (for those who are interested).

        NP: Check off whatever you think you might be interested in. When it comes down to it, you do not have to do anything you do not want to do.

        Class parent from above: agree with the poster below - check off whatever interests you and go from there. I'd assume that a first year parent won't be given "too much". I've really enjoyed volunteering at DC's school!

        At DC's school (2 class parents) you'd be paired up with a returning mom - it does happen sometimes, figure it depends on interest.

        np: Totally depends, maybe that is what it's like in 'TT' preschool. In my preschool, you get a turn if you volunteer, either your first or second year. There are 3 class parents per class if that many people are interested, too.

        Have you been asked to do other volunteer work for the school? I'm a great class parent - but I'd be awful as chair of the annual benefit and I feel as though the school tries to take this into account.
