          • does it vary so greatly from one school to another? dont most schools do similar types of math work. if not, nest, anderson, ps 9, ps 6, dalton, hm, grace church, spence...those types of schools.

              • Well, if we're talking state curriculum, my pre-K DC just took an assessment test and tested at 2nd grade level, which was mostly things like shapes, fractions, and plus 1, minus 1 sums and word problems, so state standards are pretty much a joke.

                • my anderson 2nd grader just finished the unit on geometry. previously did units on adding and subtracting decimal point place value to the thousandths place, division, multiplication, fractions, etc.

    • Anderson K: currently doing double digit addition and subtraction, have studied all coins (currently on last coin, the quarter), 1 math sheet for homework each night, sometimes with word problems ("Ava has 73 paper clips. Pedro has 41 paper clips. How many paper clips do Ava and Pedro have together?"). I have heard that Anderson uses Everyday Math, but also supplements, but at this stage (K) I don't really have any appreciation for what that means or how it might be different from the math approach that NEST or other schools use.

      • Moving way to fast for most of students to have gotten the concepts behind this.... I would hate for my bright K boy to be moving so fast. What's the hurry?

        • it's not too fast. (dc is at anderson, 2nd grade.) there are a couple of kids who may be struggling a bit at this point, but i believe the vast majority keep up. ime, the teachers are terrific about making sure all the kids are on the same page -- they speed up or slow down, depending on the feedback (via pre and post unit assessments, classwork, and homework) from the kids. my dc, who isn't exactly a "math" kid, has done very well so far with the program.

      • Similar at our private K, double digit add/subtract, plus word problems, but with homework only once a week, i.e. a worksheet given on Monday that's due Friday.
