Anyone know what the reading range is in K at Anderson, Nest, Hunter? Just curious as I have a dc trying for a 1st grade spot (at A or N, obvioulsy not H at 1st grade level). my dc is reading at a kindergarden level now and wondering if dc will struggle with the kids already there. no flames, I know it is a long shot. just curious though. Also, the math is a major issue. my dc class not doing any math. thanks.

[ Reply | Options ]I have a friend with a dc at A. Her dc's class has a small group of kids (4 or 5) who are reading at a 5th grade level- a few even higher and comprehending higher. There is a small group reading at a K-1st grade level and the rest on about a 3/4th grade level. As for math, I have seen her dc's homework and it is 1st grade math- double digit add/subtract, time, money, etc. I am so invested in her dc becasue I have a dc trying to get into 1st grade also. Best of luck to all of our dc's! Hope to see you there in Sept.

My own dc is reading at 3rd grade level and teacher told me there are about 8 kids in my dc's reading group. Math is 1st grade level. Currently they're doing double digit addition and subtraction, but with no carrying over yet. They have learned to write "math sentences" horizontally and vertically. How could your dc's class not be doing any math at all?
[ Reply | Options ]Don't worry at all. Good luck with the application process. My ds is in A and I think it's a wonderful school. WE were told from day 1 that kids come in at all different levels and progress at different speeds. They are rather solid with differentiated learning - especially with regard to reading.
[ Reply | Options ]Wow, Ks at Anderson are doing double digit addition? Crazy! My DD is in K at NEST and she's nowhere near that! Last I saw she was doing homework on place value.

At the end of kindergarten last year dc was below grade level for Nest (level D) and the reading just clicked all of a sudden this year. Every kid gets it at a different time. Last years "slowest" reader in the class could be next year's reading super star!

I was a little nervous about it last year and many people told me that it would come. Looking back on it now, I wish I hadn't paid too much attention to what other dcs were doing and kept the focus on my own dc.

I imagine it would be L or M for Citywide G&Ts. L&M is the Second Grade. http://www.placonference.org/2008/handouts/1013_125Neef_Penny__116051_Mar03_2008_Time_014921PM.pdf
