actually, they are the only countries that currently subscribe to socialist (Marxism-Leninism) in their constitutions, so yes, they are socialist
[ Reply | Options ]france is a socialist country, as are many other european countries including scandinavia. Marxism is communism, and that is totally different.
[ Reply | Options ]Actually no, France is NOT a socialist country. They have a socialist party, but they system of government is a Democratic Republic. The closest nation to a socialist democracy (what people like OP are afraid will happen in the US) is India.
[ Reply | Options ]Well when people talk about the US becoming a socialist country they are referring to ti becoming more like contries with socialist policies like france. it is nearly impossible to fire someone in france and they mandata that no one work more than 35 hours a week. This is simialr to the government controlling the factors of production- they control the labor.
[ Reply | Options ]But it is NOT a socialist country, very far from it. People need to know what they are talking about. And I bet a lot of people who were recently laid off in this country would be glad to live in a place where it is very difficult to get fired!

they are NOT socialist. China subscribes wholeheartely to capitalism. The Scandi countries are socialist. France to a degree.
[ Reply | Options ]Actually, the Danes are very pro-market and the Swedes and Finns recently as well. In fact, the Swedish PM (IIRC) was recently chiding some US policies and saying "Hey, we had to clean up a banking mess in the 90s and the US is making some mistakes we made." So no, the Scandinavians are now more free-market than we are in some cases.

And the auto industry. And the airlines. And sugar, cotton, corn...farming in general. Shall I go on?
[ Reply | Options ]Please do. But get the facts straight: the whole banking *industry* would not have failed, nor would the whole auto, airline, sugar, corn, etc. industry. The high-cost, inefficient producers would fail. Low-cost, efficient producers would then buy those assets and run them more efficiently. Or would you rather that we tax people who make a profit (by running their businesses well) to support people who don't run their businesses well? Go read Hazlitt's _Economics in One Lesson_.

You people make my brain bleed. WE ARE NOT IN A SOCIALIST COUNTRY. NOR WILL WE BE. Just because you don't like Obama it does not make him a socialist.
[ Reply | Options ]That is right. What makes him a socialist is the economic training he got in the secret camps in Indonesia.

True. But not because it brings me any great fulfillment rather because it can really make the difference for her. I find that sometimes if I have her legs over my shoulders and we are really going at it, rubbing her feet hard and nibbling her instep (instep more than her toes but them too) can really push her over the edge. How did you know?

What are you afraid of? The best and the brightest having no place to practice their voodoo economics that have brought us to the brink? Or are you just afraid of progressive thinking in gov't? Or could it be that you believe that the wealthy ($250K and up) should pay proportionately less in taxes?
[ Reply | Options ]Do you think the US will become a socialist country under Obama? If you think so, you have NO idea what socialism really is. The US is VERY far away from socialism!
[ Reply | Options ]sorry you have never studied politics and government we already are socialist in every way but name
[ Reply | Options ]Obama hasn't been in office long enough to do ANYTHING - so if you think we are socialist, you can't blame him for it. FWIW, we are a DEMOCRACY, that is very very far from socialism. If you'd like to understand a true socialist society I can recommend some books for you. But we are not socialist in every way but name, very far from it.

That's because you're rich and ignorant. You don't like living in this country? GET OUT! Nobody will miss you
[ Reply | Options ]You'll miss her tax $$$. And the money of others who leave. Do you REALLY think Warren Buffet and Rupert Murdoch and Bill Gates will actually PAY the tax increase they're telling their buddy Obama to make? Will only hurt the quasi-rich and the middle class (because they'll eventually get hit with increases, too) who can't hide their cash off-shore.
[ Reply | Options ]
Me neither. I'd much rather live in somewhere like Haiti than Sweden! Seriously, what is wrong with you people???

Do you have a degree in writing? I rarely spellcheck. This is a board to share opinions, I guess you have one. You don't like my joke. I am sorry if it makes you uncomfortable. Truth hurts. By the way I studied socialism first hand, from socialist textbooks in a different language. Definitions are many:
