  • Preschool Admissions - What is wrong with this picture? Just heard of a child gaining admission to tt pre-school off wl. Parents lobbied super hard - promised to accept immediately etc... Turns out husband is unemployed and couple doesn't even know if they can afford living in NYC - let alone preschool tuition by Sept. They admit they will likely not even be living here. Isn't this unethical? to say the least?

    • i guess it's every man for himself these days. i would be pissed if i were on the WL at that school and had the resources. what school? hope it's not where my dc is going

    • Maybe they are hoping things will turn around quickly for them. Maybe they are willing to lose the deposit if they need to back out during the summer. If they do stay in Manhattan, they will need a spot for their dc. There are no public nursery schools. They not be able to swing the cost of private k but they may be able to come up with the money for nursery. They could also be waiting on fa.

      • Good point - but I think that a careeer in finance and seven figure bonuses have gone the way of the Dodo. I fear that the WSJ is correct in that the industry is (and will continue) to contract for the next 5 years to a decade and may never be the same.

        • i hope op's friend wasn't making 7 figures and now can't afford preschool. the wall streeters who lived extravagent lifestyles without saving anything make me sick. i know a bunch of them too. so obnoxious

      • we are doing this.Sending dd to preschool with the hopes for financial aid even though it's a huge stretch. She has also gotten so much out of it.

    • I'm not sure it's unethical - don't the schools consider a family's financial circumstances (including parents' occupations) when they admit/reject a child?

        • ^^^that the psds call to verify employment. we gave dh's work number on the application and nobody called him. or maybe they do it late at night to see if you have voicemail...

          • But they probably considered that the dh's occupation is in the financial sector when they gave them a spot just now - so even though they don't know for sure that he's out of work, they know they're taking a big risk.

            • i'd say it's a tough call for the preschools. a lot of people in the financial sector have made tons and tons of money over the years and if they have saved wisely, could live off the savings for many years and pay for school too. it's just hard for them to figure out who's who

        • I feel like one of the reasons I didn't get into my fc school is because my dh works in finance. But he's one of the ones who has been saving his money and living well beneath his (our) means. You just never know -- And your friend's situation aside, who do they think can afford a $15-$20 K preschool?? People who work in finance!
