if you have 2 dc's and one is at a private school, would you feel bad putting the other one in a very good public school? Her bday is end of december, so it's either go to public school, and stay an extra year in preschool, and then do private.

      • That's what exactly what we do, but I warn you, if you work FT (I do) or have the budget and want to take lots of vacations (we don't) the two different calendars are HORRIBLE. It is also tough coordinating pick ups, afterschool programs, volunteer obligations and the like. In my perfect worls, both my kids are in a good public, but one child really needs the small classes of private and the extra attention right now.

    • It depends on your dc. Is dc asking to learn to read, etc. and does your preschool have a good 5's program? In your case December is a late birthday even for public. Plus, if your older child's school is good with sib. acceptances, I'd say stay at Preschool another year. My dc Aug b'day is in K at an ok public school right now and loving it. Frankly I'm afraid dc will be bored next year in private becasue the academics have been rigorous (IMHO) but our preschool had no 5's program and a short day. That said, we had no help or feedback in getting into a private and it made it a little difficult and even more opague. But at least dc wasn't spinning wheels and we didn't have to worry about going from pre-k to 1st grade if dc was shut out.

    • If you really love the private school, think it's a good fit with your 2nd dc, & can afford it, by all means, do private also. But if the public is good & may even be better than the private & money is an issue, do public. I think the differences in the school calendar are overblown - so you're take your vacation Xmas week or in the summer. Or pull the younger kid in public out for a week. Not a big deal.

    • I'm in this situation because my June DC was deemed "too young" we did not believe this was the case so sent dc#2 to public where they are thriving. I will try to answer any questions you have.
