Typical liberal answer to complaints about the government getting too bloated: "You want to get rid of our police officers, firemen, and teachers???" NEWS FLASH: There are *many* other things in government that need to be changed. Stop giving unemployment benefits for people who have been living on them for years and years. Encourage *controlled* spending by states with accurate estimates from contractors. Privatize inefficient orgs like USPS and Amtrak so they become *profitable*.

    • ^^ aka reducing gov't spending doesn't mean shutting down police stations and schools. It's the typical defensive liberal response (which Obama also gives) and I am SICK of it!!!

    • Well considering police, teachers, and healthcare workers are usually the first to get cut in any city or state budget I'd say it's not far-fetched. While I agree there can be a lot slashing in government which does not include these three items, like say the building of two brand new stadiums, police, fireman, teachers, nurses are the low hanging fruit and easy targets. The one point I do disagree with is that no one receives unemployment for years and years. It does end and most people pray and interview like crazy, hoping they will receive a job offer before it runs out.

      • Then the solution is to change how the government cuts spending. Let them make some tough choices that require a little thought and restructuring instead of picking off the low-hanging fruit.

        • Oh, I agree. I was just responding to OP about the typical liberal answer. It's typical because it's true. I would love for our government to be restructured, especially at the local and state level, but it ain't gonna happen. I don't see how Bloomberg, and I voted for him twice, Ugh, can say with a bold-face he'll lay off 15, 000 teachers, but this was the same person who threw billions at two new baseball stadiums we didn't need and I believe didn't want.

    • Um, it's impossible to "live" on unemployment benefits for "years and years". As someone who's collecting unemployment, I can tell you it's extremely difficult just to get what you're actually entitled to for those first 13 weeks. And privatization isn't always the answer to everything. Amtrak, for instance. We give a paltry $500 million to Amtrak on an annual basis, and its slowly dying on the vine. Why? Because we're starving it to death. And yet we give a collective $30 BILLION in tax incentives to the airlines ... PRIVATE ENTERPRISES, mind you ... many of which have been in and out of bankruptcy long before this current financial crisis hit.
