My 19 mo db is likely going to qualify for early intervention for lack of speech/poor oral tone/lack of language cognition. What is the prognosis for this kind of thing? Can he ever `catch up'? TIA.

    • what makes you think so? Is he not babbling or making sounds. some kids take longer than others but will catch up. It depends on where your he is.

      • He is both babbling and making sounds. His ped recommended he get evaluated b/c he has no words. He also seems to be showing, per the evaluator, a lack of comprehension sometimes of basic things being said to him/asked of him...so that's the concern. He got evaluated last night and it looks like he'll qualify.

    • It depends on how much you work with him. My ds started speech therapy at 26mnths, and he is progressing faster than we ever expected. My concern is tha when he starts nursery in the fall, he will not be riduculed for not speaking as well as the other kids, and she reassured me that by that time, he will be speaking better than most of the kids at his rate of prgoress. I am in touch with the therapist every week, and DH and I incorporate what goals the therapist give us to work on with him in a natural way into his life so he should not feel like it is too hard for him. That was very important ot us. Good luck!

    • The earlier you start and the more intensively you intervene, the better the prognosis is - so you should feel very good that you are starting this early! Kudos to you.

    • We had the same problem. Firstly, it is not that easy to qualify for EIP anymore. Make sure when you meet with the evaluator, you emphasis the severity of the problem (ie frustration of toddler, tantrums). Once you qualify, I am sure you will be please with the progress. My DD is making tremendous strides. Many people will tell you not to worry about it until the child is 2. As a mother, you know if there is a problem and I don't think it is too early. Good luck.

    • Excellent prognosis at this young age. Our db didn't qualify for EI, so had a private therapist come in and was a great experience. More growth than I could have imagined. Only took a few months to exceed expected development. www.liftprogram.com

    • np: DS did Early Intervention for 10 mos, and, yes, he did catch up. He got services twice a week, and the therapist taught me things I could do with him at home to help him continue to get better. And, therapy is a lot of laying, so ds always liked it, too. Best of luck!
