  • DH made between $1M and $2M for the last few years. (NON-banker, btw). We paid hundreds of thousands in taxes. Guess what? I don't care about a 5% tax increase. Its much more important to me that the money is well spent FINALLY.

      • and we've been fortunate enough to be able to live well , and live within our means. I do get that for someone living hand to mouth a small tax increase could be a hardship. But someone making 250K shouldn't be living paycheck to paycheck.

          • Sorry. Noone has to live in NYC. I love the city and before DH hit it big we made many sacrifices to afford a NYC lifestyle, but ultimately , if we couldn't make it on 250K we'd opt for public school, or move to the burbs. These are choices.

          • np. come now, you are being ridiculous. pa's fresh out of college with their $40K salaries are making it in nyc, certainly someone with 250k (and even a few kids) can too

            • no kidding. when I moved to NYC in the late 80's I made 22K. I lived. There were lots of people making much more and they went to better restaurants and took vacations. That's life.

          • I'm sick of people using living in NYC as an excuse for six-figure earners to be living paycheck to paycheck. It's BS. We make $85K, are raising 2 kids in Manhattan, and we have enough in savings to last us two years if DH lost his job. Maybe if more people learned to live within their means, they wouldn't be living paycheck to paycheck.

    • I'm not sure whether it's going to be well spent, is my issue. I support the goals the administration is trying to achieve, but I'm not sure if they are going to be able to execute them.

      • they won't be able to execute them without raising taxes on the wealthiest, that's for sure.

        • But if you raise everyone's taxes, and you don't fix the economy, and you don't fix education, and you don't fix health care, what happens then?

          • that would be bad. Clearly. So why are you so sure that is the outcome. And then the alternative to trying to fix things is to do nothing? Haven't you noticed that the Bush tax cuts have accomplished NOTHIHG?

            • It's going to set up a situation--similar to that in the UK--where those who don't pay feel completely and totally entitled. That's exactly where Obama's going with this.

              • huh? Obama is trying to clean up Bush's mess AND invest in our future. If Clinton and Bush had actually gotten us off oil for example the world and this country would be in a much better place.

                • No. I mean ALL the spongers there--and there are many. Even the left of left Labour govt knows admits it's a HUGE problem. They call them "work shy".

        • Yes. Those dog parks are VERY important. Wake up, people: If you live in NYC and make 250k+, you will be paying OVER 50% in city, state and federal in taxes starting in 2011. This is downright punitive.

          • you wake up. 1) you already pay high taxes in NYC. This is not new news. 2) You have other options.

            • We don't pay 50% in NYC. Yet. He's setting up a situation where those who have options will leave the country (will be no different tax-wise to live in Canada or the UK). Big deal, you say? They'll take their MONEY with them.

              • I know...why does noone understand this... the wealthy are going to leave the city and stop paying for anything... then where will the country be? You can't expect the wealthy (which is a small percentage of people) to fix the problem.

          • OR: Or you'll be out of a job b/c the economy continues to go downhill, which is what will inevitably happen in my case if things continue as they are.

    • I make far less than your DH but still enough to be taxed, I *am* in the banking industry, and I would have no hesitation about the tax increase if I was confident it would be well spent, which I am not.

    • It's different if you're making the money vs. living off of dh's salary. I bet he feels differently than you do. He may not share it with you, but he does.
