Since everyone is stressing over K, as a parent of a 3rd grader, here is what I've realized: elementary school really doesn't matter that much at all as long as it is a decent school. We were in a 'not-top rated' nyc public and then moved to a fairly white burb. The burb school is like the privates we toured in manhattan (but in many cases our burb school has nicer facilities). My kid was learning more 'academically' in the NYC public but has a nicer atmosphere and more specials in the burb. There was also more diversity in the NYC public. But the funny thing is DC doesn't notice any of these differences. He doesn't notice that there are more white faces in his school now...he doesn't notice that the cafeteria looks nicer and that he doesn't have to climb 2 flights of stairs to get to his classroom. Everything that parents think is 'important' is barely noticed by your dc. And in elementary school, they are all learning the exact same thing, whether they are at Trinity, PS59 or Little Red or Great Neck Elementary.

    • That's the thing people can't seem to get through their brains. For preschool & elementary school, as long as the school isn't crap, it just doesn't matter.

    • I agree with you, but will stretch it even further and say atn middle doesn't really matter either. ONCE YOUR CHILD IS LEARNING, THAT'S ALL THAT IS IMPORTANT. on the diversity end, though, i do know quite a few instances in the 'burbs where they could use some diversity. if only to curtail the rampant ignorance among the people of no color.
