Now that it's over, at least almost, who was and continues to be the best DoA?
73 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]She is a great interviewer and advocate for the school. She really does know/get the children she admits. The personalized acceptance letter is a great touch. Very skilled and professional.

See ITDA and I think Dalton is a great school, while I think she has done some good things - she can be very rude and dismissive and phony seeming - though I don't think she is really like that.
[ Reply | Options ]ITA, and I felt like she was on auto-pilot when she did the tour last Spring - it's clear she is passionate about the school, but it seemed as if she was a robot spewing the Dalton-speak when we toured. I did love the school though - not right for my dc and family, and they thought the same, but an impressive place, nonetheless.

Martha Hershman at Hewitt (upper grades). What an easy transition she made for us.
[ Reply | Options ]In the long run, who cares about the DoA? Shouldn't we be discussing the "best" principal, head of school, head of lower school?
[ Reply | Options ]np: Yes, the long run. But most of us only met the HOS is passing. All we know for sure is how the DoA performs. I hate people who have to take issue with every post as written.

obviously you can. The point is that some people need to take the devils advocate position of every freaking post just to make themselves feel superior for thinking out of the box or whatever. It's just annoying & it's obvious you have nothing to contribute to the actual post other than the opposite viewpoint.
[ Reply | Options ]-
not at all. that doesn't make it less annoying. I hate those people irl too, btw.
[ Reply | Options ]-
um, no. You would be the one who can't let someone have a thought without judging it and taking the opposite position. Omg, you're dense.
[ Reply | Options ]I'm not judging the original post and I'm not taking an opposite position at all. I'm having a conversation. If you read the posts as an actual conversation, what I wrote is just another voice joining in. In real life, what you wrote would be very rude if voiced out loud to a person.
[ Reply | Options ]Of course it would be rude irl. So is arguing for argument's sake imo. Even irl, there are people who will stand there and when you take any position whatsoever they will argue it even if it is different every time. Think about it... are you this type? If so, some people (me inc.) find it annoying. I don't expect you to agree as that would not fit your M.O.

np But the DOA doesn't matter at all once you're in. To be honest, we didn't interview with DOA at our fc tt and our dc's been at the school for a few years. Wouldn't know DOA if I saw her in the street.

this is what we would be doing if we chose the schools, i think. i agree it's a more important question. best head of school: calhoun, head of lower school: fieldston.

really? i found her strident to the point of arrogance. or maybe it was just the demand for a FC letter that rubbed me the wrong way.
[ Reply | Options ]-
omg, I hated her above all others. She seemed smug. Almost pulled my app there b/c of her until I realized that I'd never have to see her again if dc did go there (not).

marcia at bank street. very nice person, gracious, and great feedback on what dc did at playgroup. how many schools are willing to give you that info?
[ Reply | Options ]-
Ditto here on Marcia. One of her second in commands, Kathleen, was also great. Entire process at Bank Street is very engaging and respectful of prospective parents.
[ Reply | Options ]oh please they are nice but they are also infamous for wait listing MANY just to continue to be "nice"
[ Reply | Options ]Hmm, you seem to have an issue with their being "nice". Would you prefer that they be "rude"? There's just no pleasing some people I guess.
[ Reply | Options ]no just wish the schools would be honest instead of coming up with BS to tell families and WL so many kids they will never be able to accommodate, talk to early steps & Parents league they will tell you BS wl is nice wl
[ Reply | Options ]You know, after reading your post a second time, I have to say that IF you're right about Bank Street giving false hope to lots of people, then YES that does indeed suck. Funny, now that I think of it, our tc school DoA was straight up during the parent interview and said that she thought our family was a good fit with the school but that she had more siblings and legacies than she knew what to do with. Then BOOM, we got accepted. Totally didn't see that coming, but of course it was a great surprise.

1st prize...Barbara Root. Can someone please give me an HONEST answer on why she's leaving?
[ Reply | Options ]A lot of people are leaving CSH - there is a new administration and many aren't happy - feel that he is going in too religious of a direction that will alienate more secular NY catholics - don't know if that is why she is leaving though.
[ Reply | Options ]You have no idea what you are talking about. Barbara Root retired. The "he" you refer to, Dr. Ciancaglini, is an excellent head of school. What do you mean too religious? Are you forgetting that CSH is Catholic school, as well as private? Maybe you think it should go in the direction of MM -- Catholic in name only.

Julie Sykes at St David's and Anne Nordeman at St Bernard's. Both class acts who are wonderful ambassadors for their schools. Both were straightforward and honest about the process and enthusiastic and passionate about their schools while also being down to earth. Even the much-maligned Joanne Heyman at Collegiate was a straight shooter and told it like it is. (despite what people say she returned every call) They all understand the madness and psychosis of the process and were refreshing in their approach.
[ Reply | Options ]Agree with that. We loved the St. Davids' team and Anne Nordeman. I also have a lot of respect and liked Joanne Heyman, even though she rejected DS - which was the right call - Collegiate would not have been the place for him (not because of academics, for other reasons). I ended up disliking Babby because "the Dalton show" was just too much show in the end.
