Return to talk

overheard 6 yo dd talking to her 4 yo brother and using the phrases "open the box" and "untie the knot" in conversation - i asked her what she was talking about and she pointed to her vagina and said "my v." what would you do? i (gently) asked her where she heard that language and she said "i just know it." dr thinks it sounds like something she would have overheard from another child. she doesn't seem traumatized. anyone btdt? wwyd? tia.

    • I would do some more questioning about where she heard it, either from a classmate or an adult, and where.

    • just tell them both that private parts are private and not to be shared like that. don't go nuts about where she heard that -- maybe she just made it up.

      • np: doubtful - aren't those crude terms for losing your virginity? how could she make up stuff like that?

    • are you worried that she may have been inappropriately touched by someone?

    • first I would sit them both down separately and tell them privates parts are just that and they shouldn't show anyone (including each other). I would then sit her down and have a talk about where she learned this phrase. Make her understand that she isn't in any trouble but you would like to know since you know she didn't make it up
