Now that we are a week away from some potential private school contracts, we are getting nervous as hell. Not about getting in but about whether we can actually pay next year. If HHI drops to say 160-180K, and we have a mortgage and main. each month totalling 2500, we are screwed right? Are we alone in starting to panic? Are any others possibly going to have to pass on private next week?

    • I'm nervous too. Not that anything has changed. I'm just thinking maybe I was right those many months ago to think $30K for kindergarten is insane, and that we'd all be perfectly happy if dc went to the good public down the block and we had more money for travel, etc. I figure if we get in, we'll try it for a year and see. We can always pull her out for 1st grade.

      • OP here. That's our thinking too. Even if we have dc there for 1st, we may have to pull out for 2nd but a lot happens in a year. These times are frightening for everyone. The tension is palpable everywhere. I pray things work out for everone. GL :-)

      • Be careful. BFF sent super smart dc to local gen ed and the whole family is miserable. You just never know. Be sure to do your research.

    • What was your household income in 2008? You'd be eligible for financial aid with 160-180K income, but school don't tend to give aid to families that have started off paying full tuition--at least not right away.

      • Our HHI has been 250-270K but DH is not getting a bonus we think (non-finance btw!) b/c the company has been painfully slow so far this year and things are looking gloomier for the future. My work is gone and am on unemployment right now which is not gonna do much.
