  • I want to know how a gen ed math and science teacher can give a 5 year old anything less than a "4" when that child can do addition, subtraction, understands basic concepts in multiplication, so many schientific priciples it is scary and the list goes on. This has happened to my sister's dc in public and frankly, it is very telling!

      • that a clearly gifted kid can fall through the cracks? that teachers in public are unable to stay on top of every student b/c of sheer numbers? I can think of a million things. NP

          • I have a dc in a gen ed and know that these math and science teachers are not the classroom teacher. They see the kids for a very short period of time and have very rigic guidelines they have to follow. It's not possible for them to begin to talk to every kid and gleen that kid's body of knowl. or understanding really.

            • In some, if not most, gen eds, the classroom teacher is also the math teacher at least, if not also the science teacher.

    • You have to understand that the gen eds have a set curriculum and don['t veer from it. A dc like the one you describe may be bored as hell and not even showing any interest. The teachers are so overwrought in the public that they probably are clueless.

    • Frustrating as hell. The parents need to get on top of this ASAP or it could be really bad for this dc down the road.

    • I don't understand -- what gen ed has a special math and science teacher for K? Especially one who gives grades. I'm not even sure our K report card has those categories yet.

    • Is this a mid-year grade? It's not uncommon to mark down students and then give them a higher grade in the final report card to show "progress".

      • Thanks. Yes it is. SHould sister not insist on conferences then? It seems so crazy to have to do that for kindergarten but it also is not something to ignore. I am unfamiliar with the publics and sister is new to it as we are talking kindergarten.

        • Yes, bring it up and see if indeed this is what they are doing. In a non-confrontational way, tell the teacher that DC is really interested in Science and want to know how to encourage her, and then throw in little tidbits about her knowledge base.

        • There should have been a parent-teacher conference already, with another one coming up. If your sister would like to talk to the teacher about it, she should definitely make an appointment to talk about it.

    • The child isn't showing it in school. Who knows why. I would take a guess, the child makes careless errors and that brings score down.
