  • Our toddler has just progressed from knowing her letters to identifying small words. Besides continuing to read to her, how do we continue to encourage early reading without putting a lot of pressure on her?

    • There's a great childrens' photography book about street signs that is fun to read with your child. She will learn to recognize symbols from the basics of STOP, DON'T WALK.. to more complicated ones like NO SMOKING.

    • OP: btw, she knows "Mommy" but not "Daddy" -- does that mean that I won?

    • The only think I would ask is why do you want her to read so early? Many educators would say that there is a positive aspect to absorbing the world directly, without the written word as a mediator, and you can never go back again. I would really look into the pluses and minuses of early reading before nudging her on, however gently. There is much interesting writing on the downside of early reading, which is in part why some progressives and some enlightened countries teach reading on what we generally consider the late side.

      • This is very interesting, thanks. To be honest, I never thought about it -- you've managed to turn my world view a bit.
