We just had our triple screen back. NT was normal, but HCG was high and papp-A low. Risk for Downs Syndrome is elevated to 4x over normal women my age (33yo). Had a CVS on Friday am waiting for prelim results this week. Anyone have a similar experience? Looking for some positive stories this AM. Also, does anyone know even if there is no incidence of Downs Syndrom whether these hormonal irregularities represent another kind of problem? Any insight helpful. Thanks!

    • I didn't have that experience, but I did have a horribly stressful wait for amnio results when our NT results were very, very bad. It sucked (but all was well). Good luck to you - hopefully all will be well and you can get back to the business of complaining about the ickiness of pregnancy.

    • No insight, I'm sorry. But what you're going thru is exactly why I opted for an amnio. It has the most definitive answers and is actually less risky than a CVS.

      • but she's having it now and doesn't have to wait 6 weeks to have an amnio. In 98% of pregnancies, the placenta DNA (which is what a CVS tests) is identical to the baby's DNA so the results are definitive. Mosaicism exists in a small % of pregnancies so you can't get genetic results until an amnio. In most NYC hospitals with experienced doctors, the risks of amnio and CVS are minimal and very close to one another. CVS is slightly "riskier" but it is also earlier and there are more m/c earlier anyway.

        • Many times those taking the triple screens are then advised or decide to get amnio for more conclusive results -- so the waiting happens anyway.

    • waiting is the worst. I had a cvs with dd and then one with twins, then an amnio on the twins because cvs was inconclusive. the waiting is worst part of all! good luck with everything!

    • If you would abort a down syndrome child, then get the amnio. It is the only thing that is 100 percent accurate.
