Is there an independent school that is still fairly conservative and "traditional" is its values? Or one that is rooted in Christian values? My friend is new to the city and wants to start looking at K-8 or K-12 schools for her preschoolers.

    • What does "Christian values" mean? Does she want to send her child to a good Catholic school? Confused.

      • np--SHSH is St. Hilda's St. High's. I think of the Episcopal schools in NYC it is the most religious. The school had a strong connection with Madeleine L'Engle, if that gives you an idea.

        • ^^^ Your friend should realize that independent school tuition (like SHSH) is around 30K/yr. Parochial schools are much less expensive.

      • just to add, SIL is neither private nor public. it is considered independent in that it is a parochial school (through the archdiocese). we will be applying this year. heard a lot of great things about it. pretty competitive though so we'll just have to cross our fingers.

        • Loyola is very strong academically, yet it is very, strictly Roman Catholic. Unless you're comfortable with this foundation of religious instruction(RC is the ONLY true religion), it may not be the place for your family. Although they claim an %8 non-RC population, there is zero deviation or exemption for those children and little if no exploration of other faiths/religions. 'Christian' children not baptized in the RC Church, not only pay more tuition but may also feel the weight of the lines of demarcation. I'm RC and chose not to apply for my child.
