Saw a couple I know this weekend and they mentioned that they are applying their older children to my DC's school. I asked if they had gotten any letters or if they needed anything, and he replied, "Oh, we don't need letters..." Ick.

    • Why "Ick"? If they don't need letters, they don't

    • Unless you are on the board or huge donors or maybe prez of the PTA a letter from you does not mean much. Also, most people would not ask for a letter unless the school is their absolute first choice.

    • Good for them. It's annoying when people use connections to help them get into schools. I'd respect them more for not asking for your help.

      • You know what there are a lot of great kids out there who are good candidates but a rec speaks to who the family is and what they are like. The schools are commiting to these families for at least 13 years in many cases and strive to build a cohesive community. The letters help them achieve that goal when they have so little time with so many families.

        • I bet the school admissions folks shudder at the idea of opening and reading an extra few hundred of recommendation letters a year. I disagree with you.

          • np: ita. most letters say the same thing, and really add little to the process.

          • I worked in admissions at a tt nyc private school and those letters only took a minute and sometimes made a difference.
