watching cnn. getting really worked up emotionally about obama and inauguration. it's so moving to see people in the audience crying when he speaks. awesome and beautiful.
60 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]judge him by what he DOES, not by what he says. he has done nothing yet. right now a bunch of hot air.
[ Reply | Options ]they are crying because they think he's going to save them. no one is going to save us. we have to save ourselves. this country is in the toilet because the people acted irresponsibly, taking on debt they couldn't afford. until people take responsibility for their actions, nothing is going to "change" for the better. no magic pill or person, sorry,
[ Reply | Options ]He was voted in largely because he was offering up freebies. People should grow up and realize there is no free lunch.

the gov't acted irresponibly too. people acted irresponsibly by being sold a false set of goods about their morgt's. there's no magic or mystery involved here. the govt has thrown the people into the toilet. with this trillion dollar war of egoes, and all the bullshit that's gone down. Friggin' katrina, that was a class act. I'm sure people like you balked at MLK and ghandi and other great leaders.

people like me? a teacher who taught the civil rights movement to her students even when it wasn't part of the curriculum? people like me who taught in the south bronx and the projects? I don't live in a bubble, and I am more of an advocate for the downtrodden than most people could ever hope to be. and the WORST thing you can do for people is give them a free ride.
[ Reply | Options ]Totally agree. The UK is a perfect example of what happens when the welfare state doles out money for nothing. Families who haven't worked in generations and incredible entitlement among the working class (many of whom wouldn't dream of working) and new immigrants who know the get free NHS healthcare and council housing and allowances without lifting a finger.
[ Reply | Options ]agree but the options for people are really nil right now. homeless and cold people with kids with no food, no jobs, no childcare, no where to go...they need help. everyone needs help sometime in their life.

companies like fannie mae and freddie mac, who were giving $$$ to senators like OBAMA in order to stay unregulated were selling the false set of goods.
[ Reply | Options ]and who gave money to Davis McCain's campaign manager. No hands were clean -- neither the dems nor the republicans.
[ Reply | Options ]so why blame the poor innocent people who did not know their payments would inflate without notice?
[ Reply | Options ]you mean the poor innocent people who didn't read what they were signing? I got the same offers, didn't take them.
[ Reply | Options ]or the poor innocent banks that were offering these ridiculous mortgages to people they knew didn't have jobs? Oh but then it was okay because it just made more mortgages for them to sell and more money they could make. There is blame to go around on many sides. Dems/republicans everyone has to take responsibility.

Wow. And here I thought I'd have to wait until Tuesday to have my gag reflex tested to this degree.
[ Reply | Options ]OP: I am not delusional. But one has to admit that he has been a human being throughout the whole election, and has deflected all of the fear-based propoganda that the Rep party has spewed his way intsead of partaking in it. I think he is an incredible leader--as in someone who can be a great inspiration and messenger. AND also, the people are not crying to be saved. they are crying because they finally feel like someone in this country knows what they are going through. And let's face it, they cant believe that an AA is elected and that is an amazing thing, after all their race has sacrificed.
[ Reply | Options ]ok, I hear you on that one. I am not an Obama fan, but I was reading a book about MLK JR to my son tonight (in honor of the holiday), and I started crying. It is pretty awesome that we have come to this point, to have an AA president (would have been happier if it were another AA). I felt sad that MLK Jr. didn't live to see his dream realized.
[ Reply | Options ]Right, so which AA would you have preferred? What book and how old was is ur son? I would love the recommendation...all my 5 yr old says is that he's the cool guy that killed by the bad guy.
[ Reply | Options ]COlin Powell. Roy Innis. The book is called "Martin's Big Words. My son is 3, so I had to explain a little. It's ok for a 5 yo. I used to read it to my 4th grade class.
[ Reply | Options ]thanks for the book ref. colin powell has totally endorsed O and he did not at the beginning. You heard his endorsement , right? It was outstanding.
[ Reply | Options ]there's a few good kids books re MLK JR. I'm sure B&N has them out for the holiday. your son may be interested in the story of ruby bridges as well, being that they are so close in age and he will be starting 1st grade soon.
[ Reply | Options ]i have never pointed out people's skin color or racial differences to my dc. here we are on this board talking about MLK books and i know dc's class will discuss on tuesday. i am worried about how to explain MLK to him when i want to keep him from thinking race separates us. he is 5. any suggestions how to approach this?

White girl here and for the first time in my life, I don't think that this country is totally pathetic! Ignore the responses here. Bible thumpers populate suburban baby now.
[ Reply | Options ]Your saviour warmed a bench is his wacky preacher's church every Sunday for many years; he's a Bible thumper.
[ Reply | Options ]look at his choice of rick warren who will be spewing jesus at the inauguration. there goes separation of church and state.
[ Reply | Options ]rick warren is an inspirational leader who is able to help people help themselves to turn their lives around. thats all that matters here. and you have no idea WHAT he is going to say at the invocation. i am jewish but still believe in spirituality. the inauguration is not a religious platform. but there is no way he can choose people to inspire and lift others up no matter who picks, someone will feel left out, i think it was a great choice.

op: i agree. you all sound like robots. i cant believe that moms would be so anti-O.
[ Reply | Options ]I won't say you sound unpatriotic, but you do sound like a whiny, self-hating white person.
