    • Could happen the the bottom schools and the new schools (the ones where people think should I fork out 34k for this or go public?), but not to the tt and most competitive 2nd tiers.

      • Right I agree. Like the Claremont (downtown) type schools, funded by nouveau riche who lost in the markets.

    • LOL - no way. Ours had record annual fund donations this year as a matter of fact.

    • no, not even the newer schools (and there's another one opening next fall). there's enough of a market for private education in NYC, regardless of the economy.

        • That's one school that will be taking anyone with money this year.

        • ok but there were far fewer kids in the city and the schools in some iteration are still standing, no? Claremont and Mandell are here to stay. Signed, someone who has no interest in either of those schools.

          • I know that at least this year, Mandell's applications for both '09/10 K and 1st "far exceeded" expectations.

            • np What school wouldn't say that--even if apps were down? Easy to build cachet by saying this (even if it's not true).

              • this wasn't public info for prospective parents--I know a parent at the school and she heard this from an admissions staff person as she was a tour guide this year.

        • that's one school, and who knows if it was the economy that drove the merger of the two. it's not like there was a flurry of school closings 10-15 years ago.

            • still not going to have enough of an impact to close schools. way too much demand, especially if publics are going to suffer too with budget cuts.

              • Publics going to suffer big time with economiy; larger class sizes and less resources. Would not be very happy with K class of 30+ kids. PA will try and cover some of the gap but don't have nearly the needed resources to fix it.

        • I also remember McBurney. My bet would be there is a strong likelihood that at least a couple schools will be forced to close. That said, tuition for K-8 is up quite a bit from the 80s and 90s - well in excess of how costs have inflated. Heck, back when I went to Riverdale about 25 years ago, tuition for the upper school was still in the 4 digits.
