I am throwing a birthday party for my 1 year old. We can't have it in our apartment because it is too small. We are going to have about 50 people, including about 10 kids. Does anyone know just a room I can rent (for relatively cheap) for a few hours on a Saturday? I want a place where we can set up some tables and bring in our own food.

    • Where are you? There's a fairly nice Knights of Columbus space for really cheap in my 'hood, but you probably don't live in Queens...

    • Try All Souls Church, 92nd Street Y, Westside Y. I'm not sure of their rates or what they offer but you can investigate. And there is a Catholic Church on 90th and Madison with a really nice old room - St. Thomas More or something like that - where I went for something. The host was a parishoner, but worth checking out.

    • You used to be able to rent out a room next to the skating rink at Riverbank State Park (145th/Riverside) for about $100 for a few hrs and can bring your own food - plus guests can rent skates and skate if they want, other than your 1yr old of course.

        • np You may not be from the same culture as she is. I am from India, where the 1st birthday is widely celebrated, partly because many babies are lost before then.

      • We had 44 people at our DS 1st b-day. It was all family. I am so sick of the condescension on this board.

    • There is a great spot in St. Vartans playground (35th and First). There is a playgroup during the week, but on weekends the facility is available for rental at about $250. It has everything you need, starting with toys, but including tables and chairs, plus a full kitchen. 50 would be very tight in there, but it is perfect, and in the playground, so you would have some breathing room. Phone there is 212-447-6035.
