  • Just discovered that dd has age and contact info on her facebook. This contrary to the rules we outlined. That being said she'll soon be 16 and most of her *friends* are friends and classmates. wwyd

    • facebook is much more restrictive than myspace or other sites. putting an age down on facebbok may actually be more helpful, because i think i recall reading that if you register under a high school, or your age is under 18 then it is very difficult for others, especially those over 18 to be approved as friends on facebook. facebook seems much more private than myspace. you can go into the facebook account and make sure that only friends or people in her network (which would be her school) can see her photos - that way no one see those photos or her info just people that she has okayed as friends.

      • right. she and I went over the security settings, and her page is private (only friends can see), and she friended me so I can get an idea of what she's doing, which is harmless btw. I think I'll just tell her I'm not thrilled that she decided to include that info since we had talked about not including it, but if she promises only to friend people that she knows personally, I'll overlook her choice. I think it is situations like this that give a parent an opportunity to say "I trust you" in not so many words

        • i agree. my niece will also be 16 - and she is my friend. her mom is not on. i don't really look at her site all the time. but i did tell my niece if i saw anything dodgy that I would have to say something to her mom. I think that if you are in high school then the friend option is available only for others in her network (hs) and it is only she that can friend people who are older - such as you. so i think that is how they make it more difficult for people to approach younger members of facebook.

    • she broke the rules and you had good reasons for making these rules. I think you need to get her to remove that info from her page and a punishment might be in order. She needs to get into the habit now of having as little information as possible about herself on the internet. It can really screw you up down the road.
