    • hard work, without a doubt. what's the use of raw intelligence if it's not put to use? I am the classic very smart underachiever and I always envied those who had the work ethic and discipline that I lacked.

      • Oh me too. I had a friend who used to warn "being smart plus a quarter gets you a free phone call at any phone booth," but I didn't realize what she meant until much later.

            • I think it means that raw intelligence, in the absence of effort, does not count for much.

              • I tend to agree with this. However, if you're smart, whatever you do will be still different from a dumb person. I think smart person could still make better decisions since they understand more.

                • When smart people screw up, they do it big time, are more negatively judged and tend to take more of a beating from themselves and others. Being smart plus a quarter can get you more than a phone call, depending on what number you dial...

    • Several factors count if you're talking about prodigies and geniuses. It is difficult to become a genius without incredibly high intelligence, massive volume of work, years of tenacious work habit, plus some sort of luck.

      • I remember reading about the 10,000 hours theory. It takes 10,000 hours dedicated to one skill to become world-class excellent in it.

        • I don't know where he came up with 10,000 hrs theory, but there will be still huge difference between a person of ordinary talent/intelligence and a person of extremely high intelligence/talent after those 10,000 hrs.

            • Your assumption is wrong. I am interested in prodigy/genius topic because I have PG children. Everybody looks at things from their perspective, didn't you know?

        • That's what most people assume, but not really. Having extremely high raw intelligence does not necessarily produce a genius. It's much more complex than that.

    • Kids who are praised for their intelligence can become risk-adverse when they find something hard. Kids who are praised for how hard they try will attempt harder things: http://nymag.com/news/features/27840/

      • I like this quote from the article: Dweck had suspected that praise could backfire, but even she was surprised by the magnitude of the effect. “Emphasizing effort gives a child a variable that they can control,” she explains. “They come to see themselves as in control of their success. Emphasizing natural intelligence takes it out of the child’s control, and it provides no good recipe for responding to a failure.”

    • Both are important. I've known some very hard workers who aren't that bright and ultimately are less successful than the more intelligent ones.

      • my experience with fellow ivies is that some (many) people at that level have such large gaping holes in their souls, they need that level of paper "success" just to feel deserving of love and attention and so forth.
