  • who is going to win? the guns and religion Palins or the intellectual, refined Obama? Will America continue to isolate itself in stubborn base culture or will it finally join Europe and Canada in being a progressive, civilized country?

    • pardon me imbecile but to follow Europe and Canada is to leap into a cesspool of mediocrity and entitlement.

      • ITTTTA. Particularly with the entitlement. Parts of Canada (like Newfoundland and the Maritime provinces) basically live off the rest of the country. Work just enough weeks to get "pogey", then sit and drink Club beer again. UK is even worse.

        • Must be why the Canadian currency is trashing the US $ -- their economy is just sinking into the morass, right?

          • It's cyclical. In the mid 70s, the Canadian dollar was worth about $1.10 US. Then the US dollar was worth more for, oh, 30+ years.

        • I disagree. I was involved in outsourcing call centers to NF and the Maritimes (from the US) and they were absolutely the best workers we had across the globe. These people wanted to work, stayed in their jobs as long as possible and had great attitudes.

    • Yeah. Canada has an immigration free for all such that they let in a Chinese nutbar who decapitated and cannibalized a young man on a bus. Pretty civilized. I'm Canadian, by the way.

    • THerein lies a huge problem when intellectualism is painted as a bad thing. No wonder our country is lagging behind the rest of the developed world when it comes to science and mathematics. Oh, and I love how the Repubs are saying they are "every man" when the presidential nominee's wife is wearing a $300K suit! And yes, I know Kerry's wife was decked out in $$ garb, but it didn't matter because everyone had already dismissed her as an elitist.

      • 300k suit. Right. I'm sure she was wearing jewelry that might have cost that, but not a suit. Sort of doubt the "every man" crowd can afford Michelle Obama's Jackie knock-off $1000 shift dresses, by the way. Doubt she's shopping at Marshall's.

        • Doesn't matter what Michelle wears because she's already been deemed an elitist, so no one expects her to relate to the people in small towns -- especially not with her Ivy background. McCain's campaign is making a point of showing that they are just like everyone else. Do some research, it's all over the place -- Cindy's dress was 300K. She is an heiress afterall, and they have more $$$ than the Obamas, so who really is more likely to relate to the middle class?

      • yeah, it's all about those ghastly RICH people...you know, the ones that pay 80% of all the taxes AND start businesses that create jobs AND have the audacity to wear expensive clothes. wow.

        • You're missing my point. I am not the one trying to show that the Republican party relates more to average Americans than the elitist Democrats. That's Republican rhetoric. I am merely pointing out the hypocrisy. Nothing wrong with having money, just don't point fingers at the other party when there is no difference in that regard.

        • ITTTA. They and their evil money should all be thrown out of the country so all the poor and middle income people can get goodies from the gov't (which would be getting its money from leprechauns or enchanted fairies or something).

          • First off you are totally missing my point which is not to denegrate rich people. Secondly, you all act like the middle class doesn't pay taxes. We pay a shitload, so it's our $ as much as rich money that's helping to fund this country. My point is simply that the republicans are always trying to act as if they are like the average man and that the democrats are elitist. THAT is my point, not that being rich is bad. geez.

              • A few weeks ago, the Internal Revenue Service released data on tax year 2003. The data show that the top 1 percent of taxpayers, ranked by adjusted gross income, paid 34.3 percent of all federal income taxes that year. The top 5 percent paid 54.4 percent, the top 10 percent paid 65.8 percent, and the top 25 percent paid 83.9 percent.

                • so you feel the bottom percentage of taxpayers are not paying their fair share? I think someone who's paying a lot of taxes is someone who is not suffering at all. O those poor multi- millionaires who have to pay so much, they couldn't afford that second jet this year. Let's give them a break so they can buy that second jet and spur the economy. That's who the Rep. represent these days. Not the small business owners or people who make less than $250K or even $500K. At least that's how it's been the past 8 years. They have no plans to change that.

            • They might be rich, but you can't pay to get back 5 years as a POW...who can relate to that, average Americans.

              • Getting home from Vietnam was a personal triumph for McCain and his loved ones. He won a lottery there; Thank goodness. What has that fact go to do w/his viability as a presidential candidate or the Republican agenda to continue eradicating a working class?

        • 80% of all taxes-Is that what your filing partner has been telling you? Couldn't resist jumping on you there; 80% of all taxes? I like Michelle- even though she's beautiful, intelligent and adequately moneyed.
