  • How does Early Steps work? How does the school know you are an Early Steps family?

    • Early Steps will let them know but you can note that in the application (there is a q'n). ES tells you to include a separate letter to indicate that you are ES family and whenever you call the schools, you start out by saying "we are ES"

      • And, should I not be fretting that schools have started to accept applications and will not be sending out my dc's application until have the post labor day conversation?

        • I got all applications ready before I met with ES. Sent some out before I met with them in fact. Try to call as soon as ES office is open (2 days after labor day) at 9am sharp and try to make an appt as soon as possible. The longer you wait, more annoying it gets.

          • And then sent the ES letter afterwards or let ES notify them that you are ES family?

            • yes, that's what we did anyway. yes, it was very helpful to go thru ES . no feedback but just the fact that we could say we were ES helped us.

    • NP: We also used Early Steps. I never heard about doing an ES letter - but maybe because I had a few applications in before we had our initial ES meeting. On those that I did not have in, in the line on some applications "how did you hear about" us or "other applicable information" I noted "Early Steps family." So, I think most of our schools knew were using early steps. It's hard to tell how much impact they had as their work is really behind the scenes once your tours/interviews are done. You tell them honestly what you think of the schools and how you rank the schools and they have a direct line with the schools. So, my guess is they told our FC school we'd go in a heartbeat and for schools low on our list mentioned whatever positive things (if any) we said about those schools. I also think they told schools we were not interested in at all not to waste an offer (probably brokering to get other kids in). We were not requesting FA, so that sort of changes the picture but we were very happy with the offers we received.

        • OR: I thought they were great with the initial conversation and thought the evening sessions were helpful. Many DOAs, including Babby from Dalton and the DOA from FL, go to the Early Steps school fair in the fall and you can chat with them and current parents in the schools before your interviews. Even met an administrator at the fair who stopped by to say hello to me on a tour of one school. That alone was worthwhile for me. Be sure RSVP to all their evening events (space is limited) and be sure to make it to the fair. But, don't expect any feedback from ES about what schools thought of your DC.

            • You have probably already seen on this board - but the only apps that are really time sensitive are Trinity (walk, don't mail, it over the week of Labor Day) and maybe CGPS (last year they limited the boy interview spots). Otherwise, there isn't a huge rush to get them done at the beginning of September. Enjoy your weekend!
