what is the maximum number of kids the DOE will place in a district g&t class? Just heard the DOE was still adding kids to the one where my child was accepted and they were already at 26 kids.

are you sure they are adding, or just going through the list of all kids that were accepted and trying to find out if the kids who had not yet enrolled were really not coming or just late in enrolling?

I want to say that given all that was said about waiting lists and final offers that this is not possible, but this is the DOE and anything is possible. I guess if one were inclined to get to the bottom of all of the DOE's claims, disingenuous or otherwise, re: lottery for each school only, one could make a Freedom of Information Law request for all documents demonstrating how the school selection process was actually done. Sigh.
[ Reply | Options ]it could just be that kids tested over the summer, and are being placed at schools based on preference and availability. why all the paranoia? if LL still has room, parents with kids who just moved here have a right to rank it and get it. would you prefer they just be stuck in crappy schools when there are still spots at the better schools? people just seem so bitter and cynical. you need to get a grip.

I looked into this last year when in August, ps116 had over 30 dcs registered for G&T K class (ultimately went down to 28, when some families pulled out). Under the teachers' union contract, there is technically no cap on the number of dcs that can be in a G&T class because it is considered special instruction and the caps don't apply.
[ Reply | Options ]wow. 30 kids is a lot. I guess they keep piling the kids into the good schools. LL has that much?

How did your child do with that many kids in the class? Was it still a good class or did he get lost?

I was one of the parents that decided not to go with the G&T class. Had the option to do another year of preschool, so dc did that. Really had mixed feelings at the time, but very happy with the decision now.
[ Reply | Options ]I am the parent of a child at one of the most popular G&T's in D2 and at times wish she was in Gen Ed. I think that G&T is overrated and only out her there because of bad zoned school.

why do you think it is overrated? i often thought that during the process for getting in this year.
[ Reply | Options ]I just feel that it is such a process to get into these programs and they are the same as the gen ed except the class sizes are bigger and the TAG parents are high maintenance.
[ Reply | Options ]although, a friend had her two dc's in 116 g&t...oldest son went from 116 to lab middle school and is now looking forward to being a freshman at stuyvesant. other dc is on way to saulk/salk and friend was v. pleased with school overall.

I, too, realized this after going through the process and getting a "coveted" spot for dc.

I call fake. Schools are still letting DCs register. They won't know how many DCs have registered until the 1st day of school. So not happening for a popular G&T, i.e., LL.

Some schools send out class lists. LL has not, so I don't know how a parent would know the class size now. Moreover, they are open today and tomorrow for children to register. On the G&T form they did say they had 28 spots per class so I assume that's what they were shooting for. So the only way they could have spots would be if less than 56 children accepted placement offers last June.
