I am 35 and got my muchal results which were 1/5000 for DS. I am still really concered that there could be other disorders that only an amnio can detect, so I have scheduled an amnio for next Friday. I am freaking out that I will M/C. This is my first pregnancy and I feel like an amnio is the only thing that will clear my hear for the next 5 months, but I am petrified of the small risk of M/C. If we learn from the amnio that there are severe issues with the baby, we have decided that we would terminate. Can someone make me chill out about getting this procedure? I'm driving myself and husband crazy.

if you are this worried about this, you are going to never survive your dc's childhood. I'd suggest beginning some sort of therapy to help you deal with the anxiety. I personally did not do the amnio after the nuchal (similar age and similar results). everyone is different, but I would not terminate-I also figured there is so much we cannot control in our lives (esp things that the amnio cannot predict like autism for example), to stress over this stuff would make me nuts.
[ Reply | Options ]What's your bigger fear - miscarriage or abnormality? Try to make your peace with whichever is the lesser of two evils for you. Using this as expression, not as judgement of good/ evil btw. Good luck.
[ Reply | Options ]i had an amnio at 35, but without a nuchal -- it wasn't a common test back then. even if it had been i beleive i woudl have wanted the amnio for the same reasons you do - i wanted info and i woudl have,in some cases, elected to terminate. it was all good, i was fine, baby was fine. the m/c rate is quite low. that said, at some ppint you d have to let go b/c evne with a perfect amnio there can be issues.
[ Reply | Options ]I had amnio at 35. I was scared. Totally not a big deal. Over before you know it. I have wonderful healthy boy now. Don't worry. Don't suffer.
[ Reply | Options ]Anxiety in pregnancy is so difficult. Try to trust that everything will work out as it is meant to be. I had an amnio as well and was very nervous but found the procedure to be quite simple. I focused on looking at my husband, not looking at the "tools" used, and tried to relax. Good luck and talk to your doctor about your anxiety. They may be able to help.
[ Reply | Options ]I recently had a CVS and was horribly nervous about mc, having experienced a spontaneous mc in my first pregnancy. The anticipation of the procedure was much worse than the procedure itself. I assume you are going to a top ranked person in the city? That helped to alleviate some of my concern, knowing that my doctor's stats for complications were much lower than the national norms of 1/200-1/300....GL, you will be fine. Your anxiety is normal. The peace of mind the results bring is incredible - we just received our normal results this week.
[ Reply | Options ]PS - some of the posters above seem to confuse screening and diagnostic tests. The first trimester screen (nuchal plus bloods) is a screening test that is only 85-90% effective at detecting chromosomal problem (and only 3 of them at that). CVS and Amnio are diagnostic and are 99.99% effective at detecting chromosomal abnormalities. GL

I've had 3 miscarraiges, and had to do both cvs and amnio on my current pregnancy (twins)...two big needles for both procedures. I was perfectly fine after...no issues at all. You;ll be fine.
[ Reply | Options ]previous poster: so sorry for your losses. why did you have to do CVS and amnio? Was CVS not conclusive? Just curious...GL with your twins!
[ Reply | Options ]CVS came back showing an issue with one twin and no issues with the other--so they weren't sure if it was a lab issue or something else, and suggested I did amnio. Thankfully amnio came back "clean". I did PGD during IVF...so was hoping that this would be the result. BTW, I used Dr. Skupsky (sp?) at NYP...amazing!
