  • Law moms: Is it okay for me to talk to two different law firms at the same time about whether they will accept a contingency case? Or do I have to wait for one to refuse and then talk to another? I called one firm and left a message. Meanwhile, another firm put me right through to a legal assistant who took information. Shortly after getting off the phone with her, the first firm called me back, and I spoke to the senior partner in the firm. Time is of the essence due to NYS statute of limitations. TIA.

      • Yes, I'm the potential client. I just want to make sure I'm going about this the right way. I have never been involved with the legal system before (except as a jurist a few times on criminal cases). Thank you.

      • Thanks for your responses. Another question: in trying to decide (these are two top firms in NYC), is it appropriate to ask how much $ they think they can obtain through settlement or judgment?

        • yes, but understadn that any answer will be a very rough estimate, in most cases. they dont know enough to be informed.

          • Thanks. Yes, I'm sure it will be a rough estimate. I think my case is not so unusual--failure to diagnose breast cancer--so I thought they might have some idea based on prior cases. Mine is only unusual in that I was still nursing at the time.
