How bad is it to pull a child out of kindergarten for a week for vacation? I know we got the notice that you're not supposed to do it, but we can't even get a flight during the Feb. vacation to where we want to go, and all resorts we looked at for that time period is double. So our choice is vacation during last week of January, pull her out of K, or no vacation. What's been your experience at this age? Does it really matter?

[ Reply | Options ]not op, but family is important too. Sometimes things aren't so black and white.
[ Reply | Options ]Its quite disingenuous you are referring to this as a "family" issue. Its about convenience, nothing more. If it were about family you would respect your childs education and go somewhere despite it being "expensive/annoying".
[ Reply | Options ]if its about family, they can all stay home and enjoy family time when the kid is off school. That is a separate issue form beign able to go to the beach.
[ Reply | Options ]You and I look at things slightly differently. Which is what makes the world go round. I think family vacations are wonderful things and places where memories are made and sometimes the need for this trumps K. I rarely see the world in black and white. There are always exceptions.

would you still take this hard core approach if you reread the post and realized that op is asking about K. Maybe if it were a different grade she wouldn't even be asking.
[ Reply | Options ]I read that and realized what I was replying to. If you asked me which is more important, a kid being in K for a week or a kid doing something new/unusual with his/her family for a week -- I would probably say it is a wash. Might (depending on the family) even say family is bigger. BUT when you take a kid out of school like that you communicate the relative value you put in school. This lesson along with the other issue, I think, makes taking the kid out of school a poor choice.

vacations can be educational/enriching too ... if you are just going to sit on the beach that is not good, but if you are going to see historical sights, enjoy another culture then the schools are not critical - the Burton (snowboard family) took their kids out of school and toured the world and were praised for it.
[ Reply | Options ]We did it and it was fine. We are public and not a problem. As the kids get older it is more of an issue but for K-2, I wouldn'y worry. As far as what it is teaching your children, the memories that I have from family vacations are more important and transforming that one WEEK in school. That said, my DC is in 3rd and I won't take any family vacations this year because the academics you miss start to matter. Go for it!
