  • How far in advance must you arrange for daycare...returning to work after 3-months maternity leave? In NYC, put your name on list as soon as you are pregnant? Can anyone recommend daycares in midtown?

    • The sooner you go and put your name down (it's ofter $150, the better off you are). I think I went in January for September and some places were full. Some places have waitlists that are two years long, some don't. Sometimes people get nannies in the interim and end up keeping them and going that route. In UES/midtown there is CADS near Bloomingdales (I think you apply in Sept for the school year?), A couple of Tutor Times, and then closer to Union Square there is Manhattan Kids Club. There are several on the UES in the 90s.

      • - I don't know anyone at St. Ignatius, and have not heard of it as a daycare. I actually only know people with kids at Basic Trust on the UWS, the places in the East 90s, and at Trinity Church downtom. All are happy.

      • Call Cads too. My friend said they may have some spots from people moving.

        • we are there now. They have a space for a 2s girls and a 3s spot. They don't have any spaces in the daycare program.

    • i put my name down when i was 6 mos pg - thinking that i would have 3 months to have baby, then 3 months maternity. plenty of time, right? NO! i wanted a spot for september, and i had to put my name in 3 different places which ALL had waitlists of at least 6 to 8 months. i called a few more who told me right off the bat that they had NO room until summer of 2009. i say, once you are past 1st trimester, get your name on a list in several locations. also, the time of year can affect the lists too. september is a very busy month since so many people move in and out due to school schedules. so you may get lucky or you may not. keep in mind that most places will give priority to siblings first. i am on UES so i only know of the ones there - Imagine on 97th, Preschool of America on 97th and on 93rd, Seton on 93rd (but they're moving), House of Little People (no room til 2009 but you can still call and ask) - 2 locations on UES, there's a new one opening - a french one on 90 something. good luck!
