  • breastfed my 9mo ds. he's sick for the first time and it's been pretty bad - a viral infection with fever for about 7 - 8 days. i feel like breastfeeding should have prevented ds from getting this sick. and i know it's not for nothing i went through breastfeeding, but in a way, i'm disappointed... and feel like i wasnt able to protect my baby well; that i've failed in some way...

    • My dd just got over a terrible virus too and she too had been bf. look, babies get sick you can't protect them from everything and BM is not going to protect them from communicable diseases. It sucks to see them ill but it happens with all babies.

        • sorry (LOL mom) just makes no sense that BFing would keep a kid from getting sick. It is good for them but it's not a cure all. Sorry DB is sick though. That always sucks

      • Actually, breast milk CAN prevent many communicable diseases because the child/baby gets antibodies that the mother's body has produced after exposure to a pathogen (harmful bacterial or viral agent.) But if the mother has not been exposed to it first she will not have produced the specific antibodies that would attack those particular pathogens in the child's system. You have given your baby the best protection there is, yet there are no guarantees, so don't take it out on yourself.

        • yeah and my dr said that if I get the flu shot my baby will be protected from that strain of flu, also anything else I've been immunized for- this is nice if db is too young for some shots

    • there are many good things about breastfeeding but it is hardly automatic protection from getting sick. Look at it this way-there was a time in history when ALL babies were breastfed - do you think none of them were ever ill?

    • I hear you. You know how breastfeeding is supposed to be good for preventing allergies? Well, turns out my dd had a milk allergy from birth and in fact my milk was making her sick. You can't win...
