  • I have been trying to get in touch with NEST+M since mid July and cannot get anyone to answer the phone. Is it always like this? I thought someone would be there over summer. As a new parent it's making me really nervous.

      • We haven't received any information about the start of K and there's other stuff I need to talk to them about re my DS. I guess after reading about past communication problems it makes me worry it could be like this during the year.

          • i'm not the poster above, but would anyone actually want to go to nest if it hadn't been designated a citywide? i'm just putting the question out there. i mean, if the all-holy "peer group" wasn't what it was? we went to the open house with an open mind and were completely underwhelmed. we liked the gen eds and the district-wides we toured much, much better. and given the history there? i just don't get it. i mean, i guess the k-12 aspect is the draw? or am i missing something?

            • We toured and loved what we saw, for our dc. And know a bunch of families there that are extremely happy (in spite of the history). So that added to the K-12 aspect, and, yes, the peer group makes us pretty excited to be headed there in the fall.

              • We are a new nest family from a private. Tours can only give you part of a story. You don't know the truth till your inside. What I can say is that for our ds it seemed great. Communication is tough at many schools...even ones you pay 30 plus for. It also depends the year you are entering (we are a middle school family). It is surprising to me that anyone doesn't understand how someone can love something that just doesn't happen to be right for you?

            • One of our main considerations was that many of the gen ed schools including ours which is an otherwise great school are overcrowded and getting worse. The class sizes are smaller here and if your kid shows some sign of intelligence then they can be challenged.

              • We are a new family, have sent two emails (one to the head and one to the english teacher) because we had questions. Both were answered within 24 hours and were very warm and welcoming. Maybe the op should stop calling and email. They need some vaca as well.

                • Thanks. I was wondering where you got email contact from because we have no information and there only appears to be one for admissions on the website. I'm really not trying to be difficult. I get they need a holiday. But if they don't get back until the 28th how am I supposed to know where to get school supplies etc. I heard something about $150 but haven't received anything.

                  • Don't worry about it. There is nothing that has to be done before the first day of school. Understandable that you're anxious but just recognize it for what it is. Anything they need the first day/week you probably already have in the house or will be provided at school.

                  • i am new nest parent and we got the letter about school supplies - it is handled by the pta - you could try reaching out to them but i wouldn't stress; there is an orientation for new parents on the first day of school and hte first two days for K are 9-11 from what i recall...(not at home so don't have all info.) i wouldn't worry.

                    • Thanks for the information. I will stop stressing now. I guess I'm just anxious about DS starting school and want it to be an easy transition.

      • Hey, look everyone. Its the Nest basher again. So immature to bash a school just because their kid didn't get in. How can anyone really know that a school "isn't all that" when they have no experience attending that school. I am a Nest Mom, and take it from me, the school is great. The kids are great. The staff is great. My DC can't wait to get back. That alone says it all.

        • the doe school report didn't have such great things to say about nest. it's nice your experience is working out, but the fact that your dc likes to go to school every day doesn't really mean too much.

            • a dc would like to go to the movies every day. it doesn't "say it all" that her dc likes going back to school and seeing her friends. it says something about the atmosphere, sure, but it doesn't say it all, for goodness sakes. as i say, the schools report was very lukewarm about nest, but if you want to discount that in favor of what an anonymous poster's dc has to say about how much she likes to go to school every day, by all means.

              • Don't you realize what the DOE was doing with that report? It was mad at the ex-principal and wanted to create a report suggesting that the school is completely undeveloped, so that it appears that there's a clean slate. Then the DOE-appointed principal can come in and "build" the school from scratch, and the DOE can take credit. I don't have firsthand experience with NEST and can't say if it's fabulous or not, but when schools like 111 get glowing progress reports and NEST gets a horrible one right after being in a fight with the DOE, it's pretty obvious what's going on

                • right. it's all a grand conspiracy. and there were two shooters on the grassy knoll and elvis is alive and well and eating peanut butter and bacon sandwiches with aliens in outer space. whatever you say. btw, celenia was appointed by the doe.

                  • The DOE is so screwed up as it is. ARe you seriously going to give it any credibility in accessing the schools? Pay more attention to what the independant watch dog organizations have to say like Inside schools and Great Schools.

              • Funny though - most people's complaints about NEST arent that its like a big day at the movie for the kids. I am basing my enthusiasum about te school from our own visits there, and from many talks with several families at the school. I still cant figure out what you, Nest Basher, have going on to make you hate it so much. The DOE report? The old NY magazine article?

          • The DOE school report is bullshit. Our horrible local elementary school in Brooklyn that I fled from got a great report because it showed progress from the year before and the parents there have low expectations to begin with rated it very high on the survey they filled out. On the other hand, Nest was already doing well academically and the parents there are so demanding that no matter how good the school is they are always wanting more. I don't know if that is good or bad but it sure keeps the administration on their toes. I would pay more attention to what organizations like Insideschools.org say or Greatschools.net

            • the doe was very clear that it gave bonus points to schools that showed progress and this may have inflated their scores. but nest got marked down for many things, poor communication being one. in almost every category they were described undeveloped. and this has nothing to do with the parents' views. the doe doesn't care about that. they do care what teachers think, though. not many had good things to say about the new principal. greatschools is kind of a joke, btw. and inside schools doesn't do their own quantitative research. say you what you will about the doe (and i don't necessarily agree with their methods in all cases) but they investigated first-hand every single public school in the city using a wealth of criteria. you can't say the same for greatschools or insideschools.

                • Well I did my own independant research. My child spent a year at a school that received an A and the next year at Nest who received a B. The difference between the two schools were night and day. The teachers at Nest were far more worldly and sophisticated then the teachers from the other school who were stuck in the 1960s and are still screaming at kids all day long. Its another case of low expectations equaling high satisfaction. I think the teachers at Nest just have really high expectations of the administration and thats okay with me. As far as I am concerned, the teachers, students, and parents don't know how good they have it there.

    • Administrators return on 8/25; teachers on 8/28. Wait until then. If anyone is working over the summer it's to catch up/close out last year and prepare for the coming year without interruptions. It's very hard to get things done during the school year except crucial daily operations because of hightened levels of parent interference.

    • I'm a NEST cheerleader. I post on here about it and defend it frequently. BUT, in truth, it is not a warm-fuzzy, hold your hand kind of school. The administration does not communicate well with parents. I don't know if that is b/c the principal is just a bad communicator (she is actually quite nice one-on-one -- but not good at communicating to a group) or if it is by design. The PTA is a good resource and so is/are the NEST list(s).
