I live with a family of four even smaller than that, about 750, but nicely laid out. It's been fine for us so far; with two children of diff genders it won't be forever, but it has been so far. IMO it's MUCH more about layout than sf.
[ Reply | Options ]do they share a room? we have different genders too. woudln't mind them sharing a room at some point but it's not an option now or baby woudl never sleep.
[ Reply | Options ]Yes, they share a room. They are 7 and 3.5. Truth is they'd share a room even if we had seven bedrooms, one because I'm a big believer in it, and also because they insist on it!! They have their own beds in their shared room and won't even sleep in their own beds. If I put them to sleep separately, they're in one bed the next time I go in.
[ Reply | Options ]how old was your youngest when you started this? i like the idea of sharing too. i worry a bit that my older DC has gotten way too comfortable with having a room to herself, however, she says she wants to share. i really just worry more about naps for youngest and sleep in general since baby doesn't sleep well.

One pro of the West Village is that if you get situated there and like the people/area, the public school situation is good - there is a progressive and traditional alternative. (Not that you want public necessarily). I have lived in both and if I was single hands down prefer the WV, but I think that maybe the 400 square feet, Central Park and $12K per year speaks to me. I've done 750 square feet with 1DD and 1200 sq ft with 1DD and the extra space has rocked my world. I feel so lucky every day and don't reorganize closets every time I buy a sock.
[ Reply | Options ]yeah, i think i'm leaning toward saving the money and the extra sq feet. it will mean the difference btwn me dreading every family visit, never wanting to entertain and constanting shushing my older DC. i lvoe the park too. but i SO love the village and downtown in general. we def. have to do public school wherever we go.
[ Reply | Options ]I know, the restaurants in the W. Village are so amazing and you can walk to so many other neighborhoods with a different feel (E. Village, Tribeca, Chelsea, etc.) and they do have a lot of kids stuff now... but I would maybe go with the space, park, and savings now. The school thing is good though - only parts of the UWS have good schools.

i grew up in an 850 sq ft apartment on the UWS w/ two bedrooms. it was so cramped, and i still have personal space issues many years later! go for the bigger place...
[ Reply | Options ]interesting. good to hear it from a child's perspective. how many kids were in your family?
[ Reply | Options ]two. my brother and i each had our own bedrooms and my parents had a murphy bed. my mom had a closet and dresser in my room, and my dad same in my brothers. we never had our own space, and while my parents sacrificed a lot to ensure we each had our own rooms, i still constantly remind my dad that he made a really bad choice not to buy the classic six down the block!!!
