  • I am a gay dad and wondering if any one is familiar with other gay fathers. Specifically, I am wondering whether a gay dad's parenting style is the same or different than yours?

    • I think people are people. I doubt that being gay has anything to do with one's parenting style. I think personal background and ideals etc have more to do with it than orientation.

    • the gay dads that I know parent just like everyone else. My parenting style is old school (strict, teach respect, teach limits, not out to be my dc best friend). I think parents do it all ways and it doesn't matter if they are gay or not.

      • have you seen them do things that are mom-like? or do you believe there is no differnce? I have found that we do things somewhat differently--because we are dads--gay dads--and dont have a mom in the equation

        • things that are mom like? Like what breast feed? lol (kidding). The men I know are very loving (show affection), many of them do hair and dress up their dds just as good as I do (and my dds are girly girls). I see them as loving parents. I've never noticed the kids feeling like they are missing a mom or anything else.

    • I think, from your follow up question, that what you are really asking is do men parent differently from women? I would think so, but I don't think that is either a good thing or a bad thing. I still think people are individuals and as long as a child has a good loving home, it doesn't make that much difference. I guess if it's 2 men parenting a girl or vice versa, there could be some modeling issues for gender, but other than that I don't see a difference

      • wow--that is what I am wondering, do men parent differently? I have epxerienced that there are some advantages to being a gay dad in terms of my child's developement? We were certainly experience things thru a lens of gratitude, making such a choice (and brave)

        • I think, like most things, it probably has advantages and disadvantages. I waited til my 40's to have babies and wonder similar things about that. You sound like a wonderful parent. I'm sure your kids are very lucky and will turn out fine. ;-)

          • ^^I don't know any gay fathers personally, but know several lesbians who have raise children. They all turned out to be great kids with one exception and she isn't a bad person, just a little lost. I think that does't ahve anything to do with her mother being a lesbian though.

          • yes, you understand the gratitude. Fertility challenged parents do too. I listen to some of the moms at school and work, and wonder why there is so much chaos and need for 'me time'.
