  • DB is 9 days old and I feel like I'm getting sick (sore throat, etc). Have been holding, kissing her etc. How dangerous is this?

    • Nursing? Your baby is covered.

      • Cool. Am nursing, but low milk supply, so breastfeeding is only about 1/4 of her diet.

        • Don't stop now. You need to nurse/pump every 3 hours at this point to keep your supply up.

        • The only way to increase supply is to increase nursing time. Can you spend a week with baby in which you nurse as perpetually as possible? Unless you had breast reduction surgery there is no obstacle to feeding your baby 100% at the breast (asuming that's what you'd prefer). Don't worry about little one unless his nose is to plugged to nurse. At this point, good feeding, wet diapers, are what your ped will tell you to keep an eye on.

      • not trying to be alarmist, but while nursing can help with immune defenses, it certainly does not "cover" everything and does not ensure total protection.

        • well, it beats the hell out of formula feeding for building immune system - mom's antibodies pass to baby. Also the physical closeness will allow you to monitor baby's health. (Best of all, significantly reduces risk of breast cancer for both you and her.) Feel better.

    • I wouldn't go w/echinacea if breastfeeding. Try repeatedly goring(or cubing) a large piece(at least the size of your index and middle fingers) of fresh ginger and bring it to a boul in a gallon of water. Boil to reduce liquid by 50%. Add lemon, honey(or not) and drink it over the course of the day-at any temperature. It's a very quick reliever and tremendous energizer and immune booster. Feel better!
