The class lists for K that I have seen have 17-18 kids in each class, there are 7 classes. PS 199 is such a crock! It is not overcrowded.
[ Reply | Options ]Sorry, you're wrong. Class lists for PS199-K are not out yet. Last year, each K class had 25DCs.
[ Reply | Options ]np: Wrong. i have a ds starting there in Sept. We got class list a few weeks ago. Were told if we wanted to make playdates, we could get list- so we did. 18 kids in my ds;s class.

Ohhh, but dear the "playdate list" you got has ONLY the names of the parents who signed up for it, NOT all the parents. For all you know they can be another 7-8 parents in your DC's class that did NOT sign up. Signed PS199 parent
[ Reply | Options ]or: seems kind of funny that I know of 3 other parents, who just happen to have kids in the other classrooms, that only have 18 kids on their lists too.
[ Reply | Options ]You can believe what you want. I have been in 199 for 4 years now with 2 DCs there. The lists include parents who sign up for playdates. There's no reason for you to argue the facts. Over the last 5 years, 199 never had less than 21-22 DCs in K classes, even before they became overcrowded

It's getting bad. Now for the first time some classes have 30+ DCs (33 to be exact); there's no art roon left (a mobile cart will do!!); no music room either; next year they might have to give up their Gym. Relations with Center have deteriorated
[ Reply | Options ]NP: But is that any worse than at other schools? My dc are not in school yet, but it seems like everyone is complaining about their kid's school being overcrowded and underfunded.
[ Reply | Options ]I doubt that they will give up the gym!! It is actually very common in pub schools to have "art on a cart" as it's called, though of course a separate room is always preferable for everyone involved.
[ Reply | Options ]No way will they give up the gym. It is a significant source of revenue for the school, as it is rented out on evenings and weekends to basketball leagues and classes like super soccer stars. Plus, turning it into classrooms would be a rather costly endeavour.
[ Reply | Options ]Well in 2-3 years they will HAVE to, unless school is rezoned or Center is kicked out
[ Reply | Options ]Center school won't be "kicked out" because it is a school in that building. get it? It's been there for 30 years or so - I don't get the "kicked out" mentality (how about a polite 'relocated'?) Who benefits from 200 middle school kids leaving and 200 elementary school kids coming in??? Do you really think the space will be allocated to a missed art room or science room - or will 200 kids be put in that space. Think about it. What will the auditorium, cafeteria, gym, library, PICK UP and DROP OFF feel like then?? This building doesn't have the capacity to have the shared spaces utilized by grade school kids - Center School does 199 a favor by occupying the space. GET IT?

Go to http://save199.ning.com to get detailed stats on PS199 Overcrowding. There are links for various documents that show not just the current overcrowding, but trends over the next few years, as well as the impact of recent new building developments.

UrbanBaby Asks...
When I ride in a taxi cab with my DC I:
- Use a carseat
- Buckle him/her in his/her own seat
- Hold him/her on my lap
- I'd never ride in a taxi with my DC, it's much too dangerous!
