  • My epiphany for today - to live a middle class life in NYC today you need to be rich. Signed, fifth generation new yorker who did not grow up rich, but still had private school and a country house

      • OP: no way, sorry, not compared with today's rich. Shared a room with my sister, we didn't get the cool clothes like the other kids in our class, etc etc

        • np: Unless that room you shared with your sister was the living room, or your brothers or parents slept in the living room, you were well off.

          • Never said not well off, I said rich. Went to school with kids with horses, cars on their 16th birthday. It's all relative...

            • Private School? Vacation House? An apartment big enough that no one had to sleep in the dining area or living room? You were RICH. Maybe not the richest in the city. But you were certainly rich.

        • There are people who have no country home & dc share room who manage to swing private school. It is just that your parents dollar went further than today's. Now people don't buy a country house.

    • Sorry to tell you, but if you went to private school and had a country house, you were rich. Signed, a third generation new yorker whose parents couldn't afford private school or a vacation...let alone a vacation house.

    • If you went to private school and had a country home, you were rich. Sheesh. What's next? Your mother had a 3 carat engagement ring...but it was set in gold?

    • Not a 5th gen. NYer but I can't imagine claiming not to be rich when you lived a life of privilege by any standard. I think you need to adjust your expectations a wee bit.
